Shakira Shakes Up World Cup: Uganda's Ghetto Kids Invited to Halftime Spectacle

Ugandan dance group Ghetto Kids are slated to perform with global pop superstar Shakira at the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup Final. This grand event is scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey, marking a significant moment for the talented youth group. The 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament itself will span from June 11 to July 19, hosted across various cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Shakira herself confirmed the exciting news via a video shared on her official Instagram account on Wednesday, May 20. Her announcement came while she was discussing "Dai Dai," the tournament's official song, which features Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy. Expressing her enthusiasm, Shakira stated, "I've already invited the Ghetto Kids from Uganda," and lauded fans globally for their creative dance videos inspired by the song.

The Colombian singer conveyed her desire for the World Cup final performance to be truly "special" and "unforgettable." To further enhance the global participation, she is actively encouraging fans from all corners of the world to contribute by sharing their own unique dance creations. Shakira noted, "I've seen incredible creations for Dai Dai, the official World Cup song. I really, really would love to see all your creations and your videos, so keep sending them because I'll be watching very closely."

The official World Cup track, "Dai Dai," is a vibrant fusion of musical genres including Afrobeats, dance-pop, world music, and reggaetón, embodying the diverse and global spirit of the international football tournament. Furthermore, the royalties generated from this song will be channeled towards a noble cause: supporting the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. This fund aims to accumulate $100 million by the conclusion of the tournament, with the goal of broadening access to education and football opportunities for children worldwide.

The Ghetto Kids, founded in 2014 by Dauda Kavuma, originated as a dance and music group comprising children from the Katwe slums in Kampala, Uganda. Their initial rise to international prominence occurred after a homemade dance video set to Eddy Kenzo's hit song "Sitya Loss" went viral online. Since that breakthrough, the group has graced numerous major international platforms, including an appearance in French Montana's "Unforgettable" music video and performances connected to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. In 2023, their exceptional talent also earned them a coveted Golden Buzzer during their impactful appearance on Britain's Got Talent.
