Season 3 picks up from a dramatic cliffhanger, with Maddie Nears (Peyton List) having returned to the living. This transition, however, is far from peaceful, as Maddie is now plagued by frightening visions and burdened with the immense responsibility of protecting both the living and the dead. Meanwhile, her best friend Simon (Kristian Ventura) finds himself trapped in the afterlife, a complete reversal of their Season 2 dynamic. The veil between worlds is thinning, intensifying the mystery behind Split River High's peculiar deaths and the nature of the afterlife and limbo itself.

The cast and showrunners Megan and Nate Trinrud have consistently challenged themselves to elevate the series with each season. Peyton List highlighted the shift in her role, moving from portraying two characters (Janet and Maddie) to focusing solely on Maddie and her interactions with Maria Dizzia.
