Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has recently undertaken significant initiatives to bolster education and sports development within the state and the broader South-West region. These efforts encompass infrastructural improvements in schools and strong support for the upcoming South West Games 2025.

In a move to enhance the educational infrastructure, Governor Sanwo-Olu commissioned new classroom blocks at Ipara Junior College, Majiyagbe; State Junior High School Ibereko, Badagry; Awori Junior College, Ojo; and Thogli Community Grammar School, Badagry. This project, spearheaded by the Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), underscores the governor’s commitment to providing quality education to every child, irrespective of their background or location. Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of a strong educational foundation for the future and societal development, pledging to introduce more vocational training programs and enhance digital literacy initiatives. He also assured that every school in Lagos would have access to modern technology and resources, equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. According to him, these developments will not only benefit students but also empower communities.

In addition to educational advancements, Governor Sanwo-Olu has thrown his full support behind the South West Games 2025, recognizing its potential to redefine sports development in the region. The tournament aims to foster unity, economic empowerment, and youth engagement. Sanwo-Olu, a staunch advocate for grassroots sports development, highlighted the positive impact of the games on young athletes and communities, describing the event as a “springboard for emerging talents and a rallying point for regional cohesion.” He noted that the South West has historically been a hub of sporting excellence, and the games will provide a structured avenue to nurture the next generation of champions, fostering discipline, teamwork, and a shared identity.

The South West Games 2025, scheduled for March 26-28, 2025, will feature over 1,200 athletes and 120 officials across multiple sporting disciplines. A key highlight is the Bola Ahmed Tinubu South West Alliance Games (BATSWAG), designed to develop young talents under 18. Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, emphasized that the tournament offers a unique platform to discover, showcase, and nurture sporting talents in the South-West region. Dr. Lanre Alfred, President of the Organizing Committee, acknowledged Governor Sanwo-Olu’s endorsement as a defining moment, highlighting that the games aim to discover opportunities, build partnerships, and create a sustainable sports ecosystem for the region.

The corporate sector has also shown strong interest, with leading financial institutions like First Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA), along with energy giant Aiteo, stepping up as sponsors. Other key stakeholders, including Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, and Director General of NTDA, Chief Folly Coker, have expressed their commitment to making the games a success.

Overall, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s initiatives in education and sports reflect a comprehensive approach to youth development and regional cooperation, promising a brighter future for the residents of Lagos State and the South-West region.
