Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has lauded Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman for their outstanding performances following the team’s recent victory over Rwanda. The Super Eagles secured a 2-0 win against Amavubi at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday night, with Victor Osimhen netting both goals. Ademola Lookman, currently recognized as Africa’s best player, also contributed with an assist in the match.
Troost-Ekong emphasized the exceptional quality of both players, stating that they rank among the best in the world. "Victor Osimhen is a fantastic player, I think he’s among the world best together with Ademola Lookman, Africa’s best player but I don’t want to single out anyone,” the Al Kholood of Saudi Arabia defender told reporters after the game. He further highlighted the collective effort of the team, acknowledging the contributions of debutant Tolu Arokodare and Alhassan Yusuf, who played out of position. Troost-Ekong emphasized the strong team spirit that prevailed throughout the game.
The victory against Amavubi marked the Super Eagles' first win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series. Additionally, it was the first time the three-time African champions have defeated Amavubi in Kigali in four attempts. Troost-Ekong acknowledged the challenges faced during the game, stating, “The game against Rwanda wasn’t easy, we’ve played them several times now and it’s a team we respect.”
He also shed light on the team's adaptation to the coach's strategies, noting, “We tried to understand what the coach wanted us to do early on, we only had two or three full training sessions, a lot of video sessions and today everyone saw glimpses of what we should be expecting under coach Eric Chelle.”
