Namibia swears in first female president

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia recently attended the inauguration of Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as Namibia’s fifth president and its first female Head of State. The ceremony took place at State House in Windhoek, marking a significant milestone in Namibian history.
President Hichilema extended his congratulations to President Nandi-Ndaitwah and commended the Namibian people for their peaceful elections. He also acknowledged the efforts of former President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba in ensuring a smooth transition, especially after the recent loss of both a sitting president and the nation's founding leader.
The inauguration coincided with Namibia's 35th Independence Anniversary. President Hichilema noted this milestone as a testament to the country's progress and resilience. He also highlighted the strong friendship between Zambia and Namibia, rooted in their shared support for Namibia’s liberation struggle.
Namibia's ruling SWAPO party retained its parliamentary majority, extending its 34-year hold on power since the country gained independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990.
Following the ceremony, President Hichilema departed for Lusaka, expressing gratitude for the support from Zambians during his visit. He reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Namibia, celebrating their 35th Independence Anniversary.
