Sailors Gang’s Shalkido: Tensions Rise Admist Burial Plans

In the wake of the untimely passing of Sailors Gang member Shalkido, coordinated efforts have been underway to manage his immediate affairs and prepare for his final farewell.
This week, comedian 2mbili led a dedicated team to clear the late musician’s rental home, a necessary step in the burial preparations. The move came less than a month after fellow comedian Oga Obinna had generously stepped in to cover six months’ rent for the young artist.
A significant development during the home clearance was the landlord’s decision to refund a substantial portion of the rent. Comedian Omosh played a crucial role, liaising directly with the landlord. According to 2mbili, the landlord showed great understanding of the tragic circumstances, cooperating fully with the team. “Omosh aliongea na the landlord and they are so good, manze they accepted to refund the rent. Now that Shalkido hata hakuwa amemaliza mwezi kwa hiyo nyumba,” 2mbili confirmed.
Shalkido had only resided in the apartment briefly before his death. Although six months’ rent had been paid upfront, the landlord processed a refund for the remaining balance, deducting a two-month portion.
The transfer of Shalkido’s belongings was carefully coordinated with funeral arrangements. Items including his bed, mattress, couch, and a small table were initially designated for his grandmother’s home in Matangi, Kimbo, Ruiru, the planned burial site. However, after discussions with family members, the belongings were ultimately delivered to his father’s home, where they could be best accommodated. Shalkido’s cousin Mori, who had lived with him in the rental property, confirmed the relocation of the items.
Funeral preparations are progressing, with a requiem mass scheduled at All Saints Cathedral, followed by burial at the family’s rural home in Ruiru. The refund, covering both the deposit and remaining rent balance, has already been processed by 2mbili’s team. Family, friends, and colleagues remain focused on ensuring Shalkido receives a dignified send-off that honors his contribution to Kenya’s Gengetone sound.
Yet, the mourning period has been marred by online speculation and misinformation surrounding Shalkido’s personal life. Former Sailors Gang member and Gengetone artist Miracle Baby has taken to social media to dispel rumors alleging that Shalkido fathered a child before his death.
In a video statement, Miracle Baby firmly denied the claims, describing them as false, misleading, and distressing to Shalkido’s family. “Ni uongo, Shalkidoh hakuwa na mtoto,” he declared. “Hiyo maneno inapea shosho yake stress na hope ati alikua na mtoto.”
Miracle Baby explained that the rumors stemmed from a misunderstanding involving a woman Shalkido had previously lived with. He clarified that the woman already had a child before her relationship with Shalkido, and the late artist had cared for them out of kindness, not biological responsibility. “Shalkidoh aliishi na dame ambaye tayari alikuwa na mtoto, lakini huyo mtoto hakuwa wake. Watu waache kutumia jina ya marehemu vibaya,” he urged.
He went on to condemn the exploitation of Shalkido’s name by online content creators chasing views and engagement. “Watu wanafanya hizi interviews wakisema Shalkidoh alikuwa na mtoto ili kupata views na likes. Waache hiyo maneno. Mzee amepumzika, tumwache apumzike kwa amani,” he pleaded. He emphasized that the rumors have deeply distressed Shalkido’s grandmother, who is already struggling with his loss, and called for peace and privacy for the family.
Born Samuel Mwangi, Shalkido was a founding member of the Sailors Gang, renowned for hits such as “Wamlambez,” “Pekejeng,” and “Wainame.” His distinctive sound helped shape Kenya’s urban music scene and won him admiration nationwide. His sudden death earlier this month shocked the entertainment industry, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans, fellow musicians, and producers, all remembering him as talented and humble.
Miracle Baby concluded with an appeal to celebrate Shalkido’s legacy through his music rather than sensationalized rumors. “Let’s focus on the music and the impact he made. Shalkido was our brother. He made history. Let’s remember him for that — not fake stories.”
As the Gengetone community continues to mourn one of its pioneers, Miracle Baby’s call for compassion, respect, and truth has resonated widely, with fans echoing the need to protect Shalkido’s memory and ensure his legacy endures with dignity.
