On Friday, September 26, 2025, history was made in Ibadan, Oyo State, as Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, also known as Arusa 1, was officially crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. This significant event drew widespread attention, leading to the closure of major markets across the capital as traders honored the new monarch. Markets such as Dugbe, Agbeni, Orita Merin Mapo, Agodi Gate, Oje, Bere, and Bodija suspended commercial activities, a directive issued by the Babaloja General of Oyo State, Asiwaju Yekeen Abass, as a mark of respect for the new traditional ruler. Traders were urged to attend the coronation ceremony at Mapo Hall, stressing the importance of showing support.
In preparation for the coronation, Oba Ladoja performed traditional rites, including receiving the Akoko leaf at Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, Ibadan, before proceeding in a grand procession to Mapo Hill. He arrived at Mapo Hall, the grand venue, wearing a white crown, bestowed upon him at the Ose Meji Temple. The ceremony culminated in Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State presenting the Staff and Certificate of Office to Oba Ladoja. Governor Makinde lauded the event as a historic moment for Ibadan and Yorubaland, emphasizing that it finally laid to rest long-standing controversies surrounding the city's traditional stool, ensuring a clear and sacrosanct succession process. The governor expressed confidence that Oba Ladoja's reign would usher in lasting peace, unity, and greater progress for Ibadanland and Oyo State as a whole. The event also coincided with the reopening of the upgraded Ladoke Akintola Airport, which hosted its first international landing with President Bola Tinubu's presidential jet.
