The 2027 Rivian R2, a new compact electric SUV, has been put to the test by MotorTrend, revealing a significant discrepancy between its advertised EPA range and its real-world performance. While the $59,485 R2 Performance AWD model promises a lofty 330 miles of range on its window sticker – a figure that provides a crucial psychological advantage for enticing new EV adopters – MotorTrend’s rigorous Road-Trip Range test found the vehicle only covered 263 miles at a constant 70 mph. This represents a substantial 20 percent miss from the EPA number, a shortfall larger than the industry average of 13 percent observed across 192 vehicles tested by MotorTrend.

MotorTrend's testing methodology is designed to reflect real-world driving conditions, ensuring that EV range and charging tests provide practical insights for owners. The range test begins with a fully charged battery and concludes when the vehicle reaches 5 percent charge, accurately simulating how drivers utilize their EVs. Furthermore, the test strictly avoids relying on the vehicle’s speedometer, odometer, or any other onboard data, aiming to keep automakers accountable for their claims. This consistent deviation from EPA figures is not new for Rivian; nine previously tested R1 models similarly missed their EPA numbers by an average of 22 percent, suggesting an ongoing 'expectations and education problem' for the brand's buyers.

Despite the range disappointment, the Rivian R2’s real-world performance places it competently within the mid-pack of compact electric SUVs. In MotorTrend's evaluations, the R2 was outperformed by models such as the Cadillac Lyriq AWD (286 mi), Tesla Model Y Performance (279 mi), Chevrolet Blazer EV SS AWD (276 mi), and Kia EV6 Wind AWD (266 mi). However, it demonstrated an edge over several competitors, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited AWD (234 mi), Subaru Trailseeker Touring (223 mi), Toyota bZ Woodland Premium (201 mi), and the Cadillac Optiq Premium Sport AWD (240 mi), with the Cadillac Optiq-V recording a notably dismal 189 miles.

MotorTrend also employs a practical approach to fast-charging tests, focusing on how quickly an EV can add usable range. Instead of merely comparing time to charge from 10 to 80 percent or peak power output, the test measures how far an EV can travel after 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes of charging. In these crucial metrics, the 2027 Rivian R2 proved to be a strong contender among its peers. The R2 Performance AWD added 130 miles of range in just 15 minutes, which translates to almost two hours of highway driving. Extending the charge to 30 minutes yielded 210 miles of driving range, or three hours of driving. While sticking around longer than half an hour offers diminishing returns, the R2 added a total of 244 miles after 45 minutes and 257 miles after a full hour of charging.

In terms of charging speed, the new Rivian R2 secured third place after 15 minutes, trailing only the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, both of which benefit from higher-voltage battery packs capable of accepting more power. The Tesla Model Y Performance, while having a higher peak power output, added 126 miles in 15 minutes and 197 miles after 30 minutes, closely following the R2. Interestingly, the R2 topped out at 190 kilowatts during the test, falling short of Rivian’s claimed 220-kilowatt peak. This aligns with MotorTrend's experience that Rivian vehicles have consistently failed to hit their advertised maximum power outputs. Crucially, MotorTrend emphasizes that peak charging power is less important than average charging power, highlighting that the Rivian R2 gained an advantage by averaging 146 kW from 5 to 80 percent, compared to the Tesla Model Y Performance's 102-kW average.
