Rivers State Gearing Up for 2027 Polls: Coalition Calls and Political Maneuvers

As Nigeria steadily approaches the 2027 general election, political discourse and preparatory activities are gaining significant momentum across various regions. This period is marked by diverse political alignments and international engagements aimed at fostering a robust democratic process. Key among these developments are calls for political unity and external assessments of the electoral environment, both pointing towards an evolving political landscape.

In Rivers State, a prominent traditional ruler, Eze Emeka Ihunwo, the traditional ruler of Woji Community in Obio/Akpor local government area, has proactively called upon the state's populace to embrace what he terms the 'Rainbow Coalition'. This coalition, notably led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, is championed as a united front where virtually all political parties are working cohesively towards the re-election of President Bola Tinubu. Speaking from his palace in Woji, Port Harcourt, Ihunwo advocated for unwavering support for President Tinubu's second term bid, asserting that the Rivers people's allegiance to Wike inherently signifies their support for the President.

Furthermore, Eze Ihunwo appealed to the state's residents to rally behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Hon. Kingsley Chinda. He lauded Chinda's selection as a strategic and appropriate decision by the party, citing his extensive political experience and commendable leadership qualities. The monarch articulated that Rivers State's present needs extend beyond merely electing a governor, but require a leader who has meticulously followed and served within the state's political currents. He emphasized, "What we, as Rivers people need is a man who has been tested, trusted and found competent to govern and take Rivers State to greater heights. Ogundu Kingsley Chinda posses the necessary qualities to be the next governor of Rivers State." Ihunwo underscored the critical importance of separating good governance from ethnic sentiments, advocating for a focus on who can effectively deliver the dividends of democracy to the citizens.

Concurrently, the broader Nigerian political scene witnessed a significant engagement with the International Republican Institute (IRI). The Nyesom Wike-backed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday welcomed a delegation from the IRI as part of the institute’s Pre-Election Assessment Mission, also in anticipation of the 2027 general election. The delegation, which includes distinguished members such as Jendayi Frazier, former United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, and Dr. Daniel Twining, IRI President, is in Nigeria to interact with political parties and other key stakeholders. Their objective is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the existing political environment and the ongoing preparations for the forthcoming elections.

Jenai Cox, IRI African Regional Director, articulated the mission's core purpose during the engagement, stating, "Our pre-election assessment mission delegation is here to learn more from a variety of stakeholders about the pre-election period and preparations ahead of the general election." The team's mandate involves evaluating election preparations, assessing the activities of political parties, and identifying critical issues that stakeholders believe warrant monitoring as the country draws closer to the polls. The delegation intends to engage a diverse range of stakeholders to gather varied perspectives on the political climate and campaign strategies. Recommendations and preliminary statements from the mission are expected to be shared with stakeholders towards the end of their assessment week.

Receiving the IRI delegation at the PDP's national headquarters, Wadata House, Abuja, PDP National Chairman Abdulraman Muhammed extended a warm welcome. Muhammed noted the delegation's prior observation of the governorship election in Osun State, highlighting the significant voter turnout as an indication of citizens exercising their democratic rights. He reiterated the PDP's steadfast commitment to democratic principles and the aspirations of Nigerians across all states, the Federal Capital Territory, and local government areas. Muhammed assured the delegation of the PDP's full preparedness for the impending general election, emphasizing the party's dedication to giving responsibility to the electorate and being responsive to the people of Nigeria.

The IRI mission is set to continue its extensive consultations with various political parties and other critical stakeholders, aiming to compile a thorough report. These ongoing engagements, from localized calls for political alignment in Rivers State to international assessments of the national electoral environment, collectively underscore the intricate and dynamic nature of Nigeria's political landscape as it gears up for the pivotal 2027 general election.
