HR technology company Netchex has introduced Mesh, a new artificial intelligence platform built around six specialised AI agents designed to automate routine human resources tasks and help organisations manage payroll, employee operations and workforce administration more efficiently.

Unlike traditional AI chatbots that simply respond to user questions, Mesh is structured as a team of AI "teammates," with each agent assigned responsibility for a specific HR function while sharing a common data platform.

According to Netchex, the approach enables the agents to collaborate, hand off tasks and proactively identify issues before they become larger problems.

The platform includes six AI specialists:Penny, which manages payroll, timecards, scheduling and paid leave; Atlas, which oversees employee onboarding, promotions and transfers; Sentinel, which continuously monitors payroll and compliance for anomalies; Nova, which generates workforce analytics and reports; Milo, an employee-facing assistant for HR self-service; and Nettie, which helps HR administrators troubleshoot product and system issues.

One of Mesh's distinguishing features is its proactive operation. Rather than waiting for instructions, Sentinel continuously scans workforce data for issues such as unusual payroll changes, missing approvals or upcoming compliance deadlines. Other agents can automate repetitive tasks while escalating only exceptions that require human review.

Netchex said organisations can decide how much authority to delegate to the AI through four levels of autonomy: Ask, where agents answer questions; Act, where they complete requested tasks; Anticipate, where they flag potential issues before users notice them; and Automate, where they handle recurring workflows while keeping humans in control of sensitive decisions.

The company stressed that no confidential action is completed without human approval.

The platform is also integrated with ChatGPT and Claude, allowing employees and managers to perform common HR tasks—including requesting leave, checking pay information, approving timecards and analysing workforce trends—without opening the Netchex application itself.

According to Netchex, early-access users have reported measurable productivity gains, including fewer payroll corrections, faster employee onboarding, quicker workforce reporting and a significant reduction in routine HR enquiries. The company noted that these figures are early indicators rather than audited performance guarantees.

The launch reflects a broader shift in enterprise AI from conversational assistants towards agentic AI—software capable of carrying out specialised tasks with minimal supervision. Industry analysts expect this model to become increasingly common as organisations seek to automate complex business processes while maintaining human oversight.

Although Mesh is currently aimed primarily at businesses with large deskless workforces in sectors such as hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing and retail, its approach could offer valuable lessons for organisations across Africa.

Many businesses on the continent face similar HR challenges, including lean administrative teams, fragmented workflows and growing pressure to improve operational efficiency through digital transformation.
