Rapper Ghetts Slapped With 12-Year Prison Sentence for Deadly Hit & Run

Rapper-actor Justin Clarke-Samuel, widely known as Ghetts, has been sentenced to a 12-year prison term following his involvement in a fatal hit-and-run incident last October. In addition to the imprisonment, the 41-year-old East London native has been barred from driving for 17 years. This sentencing comes after Ghetts pleaded guilty in December to causing the death of 20-year-old Nepalese student Yubin Tamang, along with another count of dangerous driving.
According to a press release issued by the Crown Prosecution Service on Tuesday, March 3, the incident occurred on October 18 in North East London. Ghetts, an actor in the series 'Supacell,' drove under the influence of alcohol when he struck Tamang. After the collision, he fled the scene and returned home. Tragically, Tamang succumbed to his injuries two days later.
Further investigation revealed that Ghetts was also speeding at the time of the incident. Surveillance cameras captured his BMW X5 traveling at over 60 mph in a zone with a posted 30 mph limit. He was subsequently arrested on October 19. Shani Taggart of the Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that "Justin Clarke-Samuel knew he was in no fit state to drive and there was clear evidence of his excessive speed and disregard for road users as he drove incredibly dangerously across our city."
The prosecution built a robust case against Clarke-Samuel, utilizing crucial evidence such as CCTV footage, toxicology reports, and analysis of his mobile data to meticulously trace his route through London. District Crown Prosecutor Taggart stated that this comprehensive evidence led to Ghetts' guilty pleas. She added that the sentence ensures Clarke-Samuel faces the consequences of his fatal decision to drive after drinking, extending thoughts to Yubin Tamang’s family who are grieving the loss of their only child.
At the time of the fatal hit-and-run in October, Ghetts had just commenced filming for the second season of 'Supacell,' which did not conclude as a result. On the music front, his most recent album, 'On Purpose, With Purpose,' was released in 2024 and featured collaborations with artists including Sampha, Lancey Foux, and Dexta Daps.
