Rap Star J. Cole's Shock Basketball Career Move with Chinese League Team!

J. Cole, the acclaimed Dreamville rapper, is continuing his pursuit of professional basketball by signing a contract to play for the Chinese Basketball Association's (CBA) Nanjing Monkey Kings this season. According to ESPN, this agreement fulfills a commitment Cole made last year to play a few games for the team. This marks another chapter in the 41-year-old artist's professional hoops journey, following stints with the Rwanda Patriots in the Basketball Africa League in 2021 and the Scarborough Shooting Stars in the Canadian Elite Basketball League in 2022. Cole also played high school basketball at Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, N.C.
J. Cole joins a Nanjing Monkey Kings roster that includes several former American college players such as Brady Manek (University of North Carolina), Jaylen Hands (UCLA), Richard Solomon (California), and Parker Jackson-Cartwright (Arizona). Footage of Cole attending a Monkey Kings game on Thursday went viral, where he interacted with numerous fans and was seen signing a 2014 Forest Hills Drive 10th anniversary vinyl. His first post on the Chinese social media platform Douyin expressed his excitement: "China, what’s the world. This is J. Cole, Cole World. I’m excited to be in the vicinity."
Team general manager Zhen Wang explained the strategic decision to bring the superstar rapper into the team. Wang revealed that after a dinner meeting in the U.S. last year, Cole expressed his desire to keep chasing his basketball dreams. Wang believes that J. Cole's presence in China will significantly elevate the CBA’s global profile. Furthermore, Wang hopes that through Cole's position as a minority owner of the Charlotte Hornets, he can facilitate opportunities for Chinese domestic players to train and play in the U.S. Cole's debut with the Monkey Kings is anticipated on Saturday, April 4, when they face the Jiangsu Dragons.
