Rain likely to soak city again today

Chennai: Several parts of the city and suburbs were treated to short, intense rain spells for the second consecutive day on Saturday. Rain gauges recorded 30.5 mm in Poonamallee, 27 mm in YMCA Nandanam, and 16 mm in Anna University.India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rainfall in the city and suburbs on Sunday.

Meteorologists said Saturday's rain was due to convective activity triggered by wind convergence following sea breeze arrival, intensified by heat absorbed by the land."On Sunday, the city and suburbs may receive light rainfall over some areas. Skies may be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be 37°C–38°C and 26°C–27°C," said an IMD bulletin.Earlier on Saturday, the city saw a hot day, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories recording 38.2°C and 38.1°C, which were 2.5°C and 2.3°C above normal.Weather blogger Pradeep John said the recent hot and dry days may now give way to a wet spell."We had many hot and dry days in July, and nature knows how to balance them with excess rainfall. A great July lies ahead for Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, and Chennai, as well as Vellore and Ranipet. In short, north Tamil Nadu will get very good spells," he wrote in an online post.
