Delhi sees rain and cloudy skies, air quality declines to moderate
New Delhi: Parts of the city saw light to very light rain, mostly towards the afternoon on Saturday. However, the intensity of rain is likely to drop over the week. Delhi experienced an overcast sky, and the day remained humid.
However, rain in many areas during the late afternoon brought some respite.Meanwhile, the air quality index (AQI) on Saturday was 105 (moderate), compared to 79 a day earlier, thereby breaking the 16-day trend of it being satisfactory.The maximum temperature at the base station, Safdarjung, was recorded at 34.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal, compared to 33.2 degrees Celsius a day earlier. The humidity oscillated between 67% and 100%, while the wind speed peaked up to 8 kmph in the easterly and northeasterly directions.
However, rain intensity, which dropped a day earlier on Friday (1 mm at Safdarjung), picked up on Saturday, even though it still qualified as light rain. On Saturday, the base station Safdarjung recorded 12.9 mm of rainfall till 5.30 pm, while Palam saw only a trace, which is too low to be recorded. Lodhi Road recorded 12 mm of rain, Ridge recorded 0.8 mm, Ayanagar recorded 0.4 mm, Rajghat recorded 11 mm, PUSA recorded 0.5 mm, Mungeshpur recorded 2.5 mm, and Mayur Vihar recorded 0.5 mm of rainfall.
The IMD classifies rainfall as ‘light' when it is up to 15.5 mm, as ‘moderate' when rainfall is from 15.6 mm to 64.4 mm, and as ‘heavy' when rainfall is more than 64.4 mm in 24 hours. The IMD has predicted that the city may receive very light to light rain from Sunday, July 13, to July 18.So far, the city has received 69.7 mm of rainfall in July. According to the weather department, for Sunday, the minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to range between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius.
