Questlove Accepts Peabody Trailblazer Award, Declares 'Joy Is Rebellion'

Musician, filmmaker, and activist Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson was honored with the prestigious 2025 Peabody Trailblazer Award on Friday, October 10th, at The Sun Rose Hotel in Los Angeles. The esteemed award, which acknowledges “visionaries whose innovative storytelling styles impact culture and effect social change,” was presented to Questlove, aged 54, by Emmy Award-winning creator and star of Abbott Elementary, Quinta Brunson. Brunson, a previous recipient of the award herself alongside Issa Rae, expressed her honor in presenting the accolade to a fellow “Philly kid.” She underscored Questlove’s profound influence, stating that “By using his platform to advocate for representation, equity, and cultural preservation, Questlove has transcended the role of musician to become a vital cultural archivist.”
In his inspiring acceptance speech, Questlove urged fellow artists to embrace their creative instincts and overcome self-doubt, emphasizing the critical timing for such endeavors. He declared, “Now is the time more than ever… because it’s cathartic, it’s therapeutic, but it’s necessary. And right now, joy is an act of rebellion, so I thank you for celebrating me with this honor.” Later, during an engaging on-stage conversation with Peabody Awards executive director Dr. Jeffrey Jones, Questlove divulged a simple yet powerful secret to his sustained success and grounding as an artist and a human being: “Every morning: five minutes of gratitude, silence, stretching, and affirmations. It sounds small, but that’s how I stay grounded as an artist and a human.”
Questlove’s illustrious career and multifaceted work have undeniably left a profound cultural and social imprint. As the co-founder and drummer of the iconic band The Roots, he played a pivotal role in revolutionizing hip-hop by integrating live instrumentation and skillfully blending diverse genres. This pioneering approach was instrumental in shaping the Neo-Soul movement and has continued to influence generations of artists. Beyond his musical prowess, Questlove has cemented his status as a revered cultural historian and storyteller through his acclaimed documentary work.
Notably, his Oscar-, Grammy-, and Peabody-winning documentary, Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), brought to light the long-forgotten legacy of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, thereby highlighting the historical erasure of Black artistry from mainstream narratives. His Primetime Emmy-nominated film, Sly Lives! (Aka the Burden of Black Genius), further exemplifies his dedication to preserving and amplifying crucial stories. Throughout his remarkable career, Questlove has accumulated an impressive collection of accolades, including six Grammy Awards (three of which were earned with The Roots), an Academy Award (Oscar), and three Primetime Emmy nominations, solidifying his position as a true trailblazer in the arts and activism.
