Putin Stuns World: Ukraine War Nears End, Says Russian Leader

Vladimir Putin recently made contradictory statements regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Hours after vowing Ukraine's defeat at Moscow's most scaled-back Victory Day parade in years, he later told reporters that he believed the war was "coming to an end." This conflict, Europe's deadliest since the Second World War, has had profound humanitarian and geopolitical consequences, killing hundreds of thousands, devastating Ukrainian regions, and significantly draining Russia's economy. Russia's relations with Europe have deteriorated to their lowest point since the Cold War.
Putin expressed a willingness to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, notably stating his preference for former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a negotiating partner. This suggestion, however, has been met with significant skepticism in Ukraine and across Europe, given Schröder's well-known close ties to Putin and his involvement with Russian business projects like the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously condemned Schröder's interactions with Putin, labeling them "disgusting" after the war began.
The context of Putin's remarks included a wave of anxiety within Moscow regarding the ongoing conflict. Militarily, Russian forces have struggled to secure the entire Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, with advances slowing this year despite Moscow controlling just under one-fifth of Ukrainian territory. During the Victory Day parade, Putin sharply criticized Western support for Kyiv, asserting that Western nations had "started ratcheting up the confrontation with Russia" and were now "stuck" in a failed strategy to see Russia defeated. He maintained his long-standing position on a potential meeting with Zelenskyy, stating he would be ready to meet in a third country only once all conditions for a peace agreement were settled, viewing such a meeting as the "final point, not the negotiations themselves."
A three-day ceasefire, which came into effect recently, saw immediate mutual accusations of violations from both Moscow and Kyiv, alongside continued drone activity and civilian casualties. While the warring sides had agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners each during the truce, Putin indicated Russia had not yet received any proposals from Ukraine regarding the exchange. The Kremlin also stated there were no plans to prolong the temporary truce.
The Victory Day parade itself was markedly different from previous years. For the first time in nearly two decades, no military hardware was displayed, and only a handful of foreign dignitaries—primarily leaders of Russia's closest allies such as Belarus, Malaysia, Laos, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan—were in attendance, a stark contrast to high-profile visitors like China's Xi Jinping in the previous year. Prior to the parade, there were clear notes of desperation from the Russian side, with Moscow threatening to bomb the center of Kyiv, including foreign embassies, if the parade were disturbed by Ukrainian attacks.
In response, President Zelenskyy, after issuing a "decree" allowing the Moscow parade to proceed, observed the day as Europe Day, a foundational day for the EU, emphasizing Ukraine's identity as an "inseparable part of the European family." He underscored Europe's consistent support for Ukraine throughout the full-scale war, framing it as a deliberate choice made by Europeans "to stand on the same side as the brave and the strong." Amidst these developments, the European Council president, António Costa, expressed belief in the "potential" for the EU to negotiate with Russia and discuss the future security architecture of Europe, highlighting the ongoing search for diplomatic avenues in the protracted and devastating conflict.
