President Tinubu Commits N15bn to Ogun Police Academy, Reshapes Governing Council

President Bola Tinubu has taken significant steps to bolster the institutional framework and expand the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Academy. These actions include the reconstitution of its 16-member Governing Council and the approval for the establishment of a new campus, alongside a substantial take-off grant.

The newly reconstituted Governing Council of the Nigeria Police Academy is set to be chaired by the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam. Other prominent members include the chairman of the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General of Police. The council will also feature one representative each from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Ministry of Finance, and the Federal Ministry of Justice. Furthermore, six members have been appointed to ensure broad national representation, with Babagana Zannah Adam for the North East, Emmanuel Torkuma Manger for the North Central, Maigari Abati Dikko for the North West, Dubem A. Obaze for the South East, Ajibogere Toyin for the South West, and Udom Udo Ekpoudom for the South South geopolitical zones. The Commandant of the Academy, the Provost, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training will serve as ex officio members, while the Registrar of the Academy will assume the role of secretary to the council.

In a major development for the institution's physical expansion, President Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus for the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. To facilitate its rapid development, a special take-off grant of N15 billion has also been sanctioned. This strategic approval aligns with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which mandates the expansion of the Police Academy, currently situated in Wudil, Kano State, into a multi-campus institution across various parts of the country.

The substantial intervention fund of N15 billion is earmarked to be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund). These funds are designated to support priority infrastructure projects, enhance academic facilities, provide adequate student accommodation, and acquire core training assets essential for a modern policing institution. This decision was a culmination of a high-level consultative meeting that involved key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, officials from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The meeting thoroughly assessed critical factors such as student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance standards, and the long-term manpower requirements of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently undergoing a recruitment drive.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, quoted President Tinubu as emphasizing that this expansion initiative is pivotal. The President stated that it would significantly enhance institutional governance, strengthen the quality and relevance of modern policing education, and ultimately bolster national security across Nigeria.
