President Suluhu's Controversial Pick: Daughter Lands Top Government Role

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is facing heightened scrutiny following a series of high-profile government appointments that have raised accusations of nepotism and governance concerns. Over the weekend in Dar es Salaam, several of the President’s close relatives were appointed to key ministerial positions, prompting criticism from opposition parties, civil society organizations, and governance watchdogs, particularly in the aftermath of the highly contested 2025 general election.
Among the most controversial appointments, President Suluhu Hassan named her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, as Deputy Minister of Education, while her son-in-law, Mohammed Mchengerwa, was appointed Minister of Health. Government spokespeople defended the decisions, citing the appointees’ qualifications and experience. Critics, however, argue that the timing and nature of the appointments suggest a preference for personal loyalty over independent merit.
Opposition leaders have framed these actions as an attempt to consolidate institutional control among trusted allies during a politically sensitive period. A prominent opposition figure, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that while the President pledged national unity, these moves instead appear focused on power consolidation within her immediate family, undermining public trust and the integrity of Tanzania’s public institutions.
Governance experts warn of the long-term implications of placing family members in influential administrative roles. Such practices, they argue, can impede accountability, heighten the risk of corruption, and weaken public confidence in democratic institutions. As a result, President Suluhu Hassan’s administration faces intense national and international scrutiny, balancing domestic unrest with global attention following her controversial election victory.
