Political Kidnap Drama Unfolds: Minister's Sister Rescued, Demolition Follows Alleged Hideout
The Oyo State Police Command has revealed an alleged insider role in the recent abduction of former Minister Adebayo Adelabu's sister and children in Ibadan, leading to the demolition of a kidnappers' hideout. The swift rescue operation, which saw the family freed in early June, garnered public commendation, though debates ensued over the authenticity of rescue footage. Investigations are ongoing to bring all perpetrators to justice.
The Oyo State Police Command has disclosed a significant development in the recent kidnapping case involving the sister and two children of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu. Preliminary investigations point towards an alleged collaboration between kidnappers and a personal assistant attached to a member of Adelabu's family. According to CSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the police spokesperson, this suggests an insider's role facilitated the abduction, which occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State. The suspect is believed to have provided crucial support to the kidnappers during the operation.
The victims, identified as Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, were abducted on Wednesday, June 3, from the Elewura, Challenge area of Ibadan. Their ordeal came to an end with a successful rescue operation on Saturday, June 6, following intensified efforts by security operatives. This swift action by the Nigeria Police Force was widely commended, including by comedian Warri Pikin, who praised the police for their efficiency in securing the family's freedom just days after the incident. However, Warri Pikin also urged the police to channel similar urgency and dedication towards the cases of other abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, emphasizing the need for consistent efforts across all such incidents.
Further actions by the Oyo State Government reinforced the crackdown on such criminal activities. On Monday, following the rescue, officials from the Oyo State Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, accompanied by Nigeria Police Force operatives, demolished a three-bedroom bungalow. This building, located in the Lako Community, Aiyegun-Anaye road area of Ibadan, was identified and used as a hideout by the kidnappers responsible for the abduction of Adelabu's family members. This demolition signifies the state's commitment to dismantling the infrastructure supporting criminal networks.
Amidst the commendations, the rescue operation also faced skepticism from some quarters. Former presidential aide Reno Omokri actively refuted claims made by an X user, Okafor Samuel, who alleged that the viral video capturing the rescue was staged. Omokri had initially shared the footage on his verified X handle to commend the swift action of Nigeria's security agencies. In response to the critic, Omokri challenged the user to provide evidence for their claims, noting that some kidnappers were captured alive and warning against spreading false information that could cause public panic and disaffection against the government. He emphasized the seriousness of such allegations and the potential legal consequences.
Investigations into the extensive network behind the kidnapping are currently ongoing, with security operatives committed to tracking down all individuals connected to the crime. The Oyo State Police Command has assured residents that all efforts are being intensified to dismantle these criminal operations and bring all perpetrators to justice, ensuring the safety and security of the community.
