Political Firestorm: 'Bitcoin Senator' Lummis Rages Against Democrats Over Stalled Crypto Clarity Act

Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis has once again criticized Democrats for obstructing the passage of the long-awaited Crypto Clarity Act. Speaking on the Crypto in America podcast on Thursday, Senator Lummis expressed her belief that the bill could have been passed months ago, but is being unfairly delayed. Lawmakers are currently aiming for the Clarity Act to be approved before Congress adjourns for its August recess.

Despite being drafted with bipartisan support, certain Democrats have voiced dissatisfaction with the current iteration of the bill. Senator Lummis quoted Senator Thune, stating that a vote is still on track before the August recess and that he intends to move forward with it. However, Lummis elaborated on the primary challenge, noting, "The biggest obstacle is that the Democrats, in spite of having 11 months to work on this bill intensely, which we have done, still won’t commit to voting for it, and that that is the bigger challenge."

She further explained the evolution of the bill, which has grown significantly in scope due to Democratic input. "When we started working with [the Democrats] last Labor Day, the Clarity Act was about 300 pages — it’s getting closer to 700 pages. Most of those new pages were added at the requests of Democrats," Lummis stated. She also conveyed her frustration with the continuous back-and-forth, stating, "This messing around, this pussyfooting around with, I want to change this, no, I want to change it back, I like the House version, no, let’s go with the Senate version, and then bringing last minute changes to this bill that could have been brought weeks ago — in fact, months ago — is absurd, and I’m just tired of being played."

While major financial institutions, lawmakers, and companies have publicly supported the new legislation, a group of Democrats issued a statement last week indicating that the bill, in its current form, is insufficient. Nevertheless, Senator Lummis remains hopeful, suggesting that despite a busy legislative agenda before the August recess, there is still an opportunity for the bill to be considered for a vote.

The Clarity Act has been in a state of deadlock for much of 2026, even after being passed by the House of Representatives last year with strong bipartisan backing. This delay has been partially attributed to concerns raised by the banking lobby regarding stablecoin yield. A recently updated version of the Clarity Act was introduced last week, which aims to address ethics concerns by prohibiting government officials and their families from issuing or promoting cryptocurrencies.

Republicans are actively working to secure bipartisan support for the bill this week to advance the legislation. If passed, this highly anticipated bill would establish a much-needed regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency market. Senator Cynthia Lummis, known as the "Bitcoin Senator" due to her strong pro-crypto stance and close ties with former President Trump, has been a pivotal figure in crypto legislation on Capitol Hill. She previously contributed to drafting the Bitcoin Act for a Bitcoin strategic reserve and co-sponsored the 2025 GENIUS Act, which focused on regulating stablecoins.
