Political Earthquake: PDP Expels Wike, Fayose, Anyanwu Over 'Anti-Party Activities'

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, announced the expulsion of 11 high-profile members, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, its suspended National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose. The motion for their expulsion was moved by Chief Olabode George, former National Vice Chairman of the party (South), and seconded by Hon. Samaila Burga, Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi. Other expelled members include Umar Bature, Ajibade Kamarudeen (SAN), Senator Mao Ohabunwa, Uwachukwu, George Turner, Dan Orbih, Mohammed Abdulrahman, Austin Nwachukwu, and Abraham Amah.

The party cited various reasons for the expulsions, including anti-party activities, fostering disunity, engaging in a series of litigation against the party's interests, and acting inconsistently with the party's collective interests. Chief Olabode George specifically alleged that some members, in collaboration with Wike, deliberately worked to prevent the 2025 National Elective Convention from taking place. The PDP stated that this "landmark move" was aimed at restoring unity, discipline, and focus ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the decision promptly ratified by an overwhelming majority of delegates, underscoring the party’s commitment to eradicating internal divisions.

Despite the party's assertion, the expulsions were met with significant dissent and rejection. Nyesom Wike, through his Senior Special Assistant on Publicity and Communications, Lere Olayinka, vehemently rejected his purported expulsion. Olayinka dismissed the convention and its attendees as "intoxicated" individuals who decided to "start dirty December in November," rendering their decisions irrelevant. He characterized the event as a "social party" and advised ignoring whatever statements emerged from it.

Furthermore, two state governors, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, publicly dissociated themselves from the expulsion decision. Governor Fintiri, who was present at the convention and served as Chairman of the Convention Committee, stated that he believes the decision is not in the best interest of the party and could further plunge the PDP into an "unending crisis." He reiterated his commitment to peace, stability, and reconciliation within the PDP, urging all stakeholders to work towards healing divisions and striving for unity. Similarly, Governor Mutfwang stated that he was not part of any consultation leading to the action, nor was the issue tabled at the PDP Governors’ Forum or the National Executive Committee. He emphasized that the decision does not represent his stance and that the PDP needs unity, honest engagement, and a collective approach to reposition itself, especially at such a sensitive moment in its history.

The national convention itself proceeded despite multiple court rulings, including one obtained by former Adamawa governor Sule Lamido, seeking to halt the exercise. A high court judgment in Oyo State, however, allowed the event to proceed. PDP National Chairman Ambassador Ilya Damagum, Governor Fintiri, and other party leaders expressed confidence in the legality of the exercise, with Emma Ogini, National Vice Chairman (South South), alleging that President Bola Tinubu and the APC were behind the party's internal crisis. Chief Olabode George also criticized Lamido for taking the party to court, asserting that the convention and its outcome would stand regardless of such "antics." The convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan saw thousands of delegates from 17 states in attendance, with accreditation beginning after many had already arrived.
