Oyo APC Members Take to Streets, Sparking PDP Retort

Hundreds of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State took to the streets of Ibadan on Monday, protesting against the alleged intimidation of Honourable Ibrahim Shittu. Shittu, who represents the Saki West state constituency, has voiced strong opposition to the approval of a N300 billion loan request made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration in the state. The protest began at the APC secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan, and concluded at the Mokola roundabout, drawing attention to what the demonstrators described as the state's escalating debt profile.
Honourable Shittu had previously challenged the legality of the N300 billion loan approval, asserting that it was unconstitutional because it was passed by less than two-thirds of the Assembly members. He further argued that the House never properly sat to approve the loan request, contrary to official claims. In response to these allegations, the Oyo State House of Assembly issued a statement, jointly signed by the Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, and the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Media, Public Affairs and ICT, Waheed Akintayo. This statement refuted the lawmaker's claims, affirming that the loan was indeed approved during a plenary session by the majority of members in attendance, and that the approval process was transparent, not conducted in secrecy as alleged.
Mr. Olayide Abas, the chairman of the APC in Oyo State, further criticized the current administration's financial management, specifically highlighting the rising debt profile. He contended that there was no justification for this increase, especially given the improved monthly allocations from the Federation Account and the state's Internally Generated Revenue. Abas suggested that proper utilization of these existing funds would eliminate the need for the government to seek additional loans, whether locally or internationally. He also expressed the sentiment that the people of Oyo State are weary of the PDP administration, positioning the APC as the only viable alternative. Abas declared the APC's readiness to regain power in 2027, pledging to prevent the PDP from further mortgaging the lives of the state's citizens through unrestricted access to loans.
