Own a Piece of Literary History: Charles Dickens's Ornate Travel Desk Hits Auction Block

Charles Dickens, one of the most celebrated English writers of the 19th century, known for iconic works such as Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, continues to captivate audiences, and now, fans have a unique opportunity to own a piece of his personal history. RR Auction is currently facilitating the sale of some of Dickens's cherished possessions, offering a rare glimpse into the author's private world and his penchant for distinctive items.
Among the notable items up for auction is Dickens’s portable travel writing desk. This historically significant piece features a fruitwood exterior, adorned with a beautifully carved mother-of-pearl inlay and elegant silver banding. When closed, the compact desk measures approximately 13.75 by 9.5 by 3.5 inches. Inside, it reveals a practical writing slope decorated with leather and a mahogany compartment, perfectly designed to hold essential writing equipment like glass ink bottles and a letter opener. An intriguing engraving within the desk reads, “Venerables writing box and pen holder, presented to Evelyn by your Mama, on the occasion of being appointed schoolmistress.” The term “Venerables” was a fond nickname the Dickens family used for the author himself. As of the current report, bids for this remarkable artifact are approaching $8000.
Another exquisite item from Dickens's estate available for bidding is a 32-piece silverware set. This collection, which originated from Gad’s Hill Place, the author’s country home, comprises 10 dessert spoons, 10 forks, 10 teaspoons, and two small salt spoons. Each utensil is uniquely adorned with Dickens’s initials, crafted in elegant cursive, and features a distinct fiddle-leaf pattern. Manufactured by Martin, Hall & Co. of Sheffield around 1860, the cutlery is described by RR Auction as being in conditions ranging from “very good” to “fine.” Following nine bids, the current price for this historical silverware set stands close to $6000.
For those eager to acquire these unique literary artifacts, time is of the essence. Bidding for both the travel writing desk and the silverware set is scheduled to conclude on the night of Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
Beyond these auction items, Charles Dickens was widely known for collecting an array of distinctive reading and writing accessories. One particularly unusual possession he owned was a letter opener fashioned from the stuffed paw of his beloved deceased cat, Bob, further illustrating his eccentric and memorable tastes.
