Osun On Edge: Election Security Concerns Mount Amidst Adeleke's Backing

The upcoming August 15 governorship election in Osun State is poised to be a pivotal event, not only for its local governance implications but also as a critical litmus test for Nigeria's electoral readiness leading up to the 2027 general elections. Preparations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are advancing, while political parties are actively mobilizing supporters amidst growing concerns over security, police neutrality, and intricate internal party dynamics.

INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, has affirmed the commission's robust preparations, expressing satisfaction with the functionality of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) following a recent mock accreditation exercise. He highlighted the BVAS's optimal field resilience and its dual-authentication capabilities, which utilize either fingerprint or facial recognition, enabling voter accreditation within 30 seconds to two minutes. In response to concerns from some political parties, INEC has increased the total number of BVAS devices deployed for the election from 4,427 to 5,130, specifically to accommodate split polling units in large areas such as Ife East, Irewole, Egbedore, Ede North, and Osogbo. Amupitan also detailed stringent measures against vote-buying, including the deployment of plainclothes anti-corruption officers to monitor polling unit perimeters and arrest both buyers and sellers. Furthermore, INEC is partnering with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to track suspicious bank transactions, with potential leverage from the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and ongoing discussions with the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation for additional combat strategies. Emphasizing the need for a peaceful election, the INEC boss confirmed strategic meetings with security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) and assured persons with disabilities of seamless participation in the electoral process.
