NPP's 2028 Power Play: Sammi Awuku Reveals Bold Election Strategy

Sammi Awuku, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority, and Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, has openly expressed his profound indebtedness to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He credits the party with investing significantly in his political development, providing him with invaluable training and exposure to diverse international political systems. Awuku recounted how the NPP sponsored his participation in grassroots training and mobilisation programmes in China, where he meticulously observed the organisational strategies of the Communist Party of China. He emphasized learning key aspects of how the Communist Party structures its base and mobilizes support effectively. Beyond China, Awuku also gained crucial insights from the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, particularly regarding their party training methodologies and robust organisational structures. Furthermore, his engagement with the Christian Democratic Union in Germany, facilitated by the NPP, broadened his political networks and deepened his understanding of global political landscapes. This extensive exposure, Awuku stated, has not only enriched his comprehension of political organisation but also solidified his commitment to contributing to the NPP's sustained growth and success.

Looking ahead to the next general elections, Sammi Awuku, speaking on Joy News AM Show on Wednesday, April 22, suggested that Ghana's 2028 polls are poised to mark a significant paradigm shift in political strategy. He posited that the anticipated absence of President John Dramani Mahama from the ballot will fundamentally alter the dynamics for the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC). Awuku highlighted a recurring pattern in Ghanaian presidential contests where long-standing candidates eventually exit the race, compelling their parties to re-strategize. Citing Mr. Mahama's dominant presence in previous elections (2012, 2016, and 2024), Awuku noted that his eventual departure would present both a challenge and an opportunity for the NDC. He drew parallels with the NPP's experience following the exit of former president Nana Akufo-Addo, who contested multiple elections before stepping aside. Akufo-Addo's departure, Awuku explained, necessitated the NPP to present a "new candidate" to the electorate, demanding intensive efforts to build recognition and support from the grassroots. Awuku stressed that political campaigning in Ghana is often misconstrued, with an overemphasis on visible campaign tools like billboards and branded merchandise, arguing that the true essence of political marketing lies "on the ballot" and is shaped more by the candidate's identity, credibility, and perceived readiness for office rather than mere visibility.

In line with these observations, Awuku also announced that the New Patriotic Party is preparing to introduce strategic changes to its political approach as it gears up for the 2028 general elections. The former NPP National Organiser revealed that the party is currently engaged in a period of introspective reflection and comprehensive reorganisation in the aftermath of the 2024 elections. This strategic recalibration focuses on rebuilding trust, strengthening internal structures, and enhancing engagement with the wider electorate. Awuku articulated that the new direction will prioritize deeper, more effective grassroots mobilisation, structured communication frameworks, and sustained interaction with party members, industry stakeholders, and the general public. He emphasized the party's intention to foster closer ties with communities to better comprehend their challenges, ensuring that NPP's policies and messaging genuinely reflect ground-level realities. This proactive engagement is exemplified by Dr. Bawumia, who is actively connecting with people to understand their problems and wellbeing. The revamped approach also necessitates stronger internal coordination to guarantee that communicators, organisers, and leadership remain consistently aligned in their message delivery. Awuku underscored that achieving political success in 2028 will hinge on unwavering consistency, rigorous discipline, and highly effective mobilisation across all echelons of the party structure. He confirmed that the NPP is meticulously reviewing past campaign strategies and adopting innovative methods to bolster voter engagement and organisational efficiency, with a clear focus on listening more, engaging more, and organising better to confidently reposition itself for the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party has vehemently refuted and dismissed claims circulating on social media regarding alleged financial impropriety. The party's attention was drawn to a publication on a Facebook page identified as “Wo Boooowa,” which maliciously claimed that the NPP's National Treasurer was diverting party dues into a personal account. Specifically, the publication alleged the use of the shortcode *714*2028# as an alternative channel for dues collection. In a statement issued by the Office of the National Treasurer, the NPP firmly denied these allegations, branding them as false and malicious attempts to undermine its legitimate dues mobilisation efforts. To dispel any ambiguity, the statement unequivocally clarified that the party’s official dues collection shortcode has consistently been *920*270#. It further stressed that the shortcode referenced in the false publication has never been utilized by the party for revenue collection at any point during the current Treasurer’s tenure. The Office of the National Treasurer reassured all party members and stakeholders of the integrity of its financial operations, confirming that the official shortcode for dues payments remains unchanged. The public was strongly urged to disregard the code *714*2028#, which the party stated is being circulated with malicious intent. The NPP reiterated its unwavering commitment to transparency in its financial dealings and issued a stern caution against the propagation of misinformation that could potentially disrupt party activities and sow discord among its members.
