Northern Quarter is tailor-made for Shein's new fast-fashion HQ

It was the rag-trade that really put Manchester on the map.

So, it's only fitting that the city is now emerging as the UK's fast-fashion capital. Chinese clothing giant Shein has joined the likes of Boohoo, PrettyLittleThing and Missguided by making the Northern Quarter the home of its new offshoot brand Musera.

It's moved into the upper floors of the building which was once home to legendary club The Roadhouse. After standing empty for more than a decade, work on refurbishing the 150-year-old Grade II-listed former textiles warehouse on Newton Street is underway.

And in a return to the building's origins in the cotton industry, around 25 Musera staff have moved into a new HQ on the third and fourth floors. A Shein spokesperson said: "It's a reflection of how our fashion brands are thriving in the UK."

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday last year, chief product officer Gemma Dunne, said: "Setting up in Manchester, the home of fast fashion, was probably one of the best moves that Shein could make in terms of placement in the industry."

Meanwhile the basement which once housed the Roadhouse is also set to be converted into offices, although a tenant has yet to be found. Some of the biggest names in pop and rock music - including Coldplay, The White Stripes, The Chemical Brothers, Muse and Elbow - played the club as up-and-coming acts.

The venue, which shut in May 2015, also hosted several much-loved club nights, such as Electric Chair, Get a Grip and Friends and Family.
