Nigeria Unveils 'Detty December' Task Force, Establishes Tourism Economic Zones
Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved three major initiatives proposed by the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, signaling a bold move to reposition the country as a global tourism and creative hub. Announced by Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa at a press conference, the projects aim to attract investment, enhance Nigeria’s cultural visibility, and improve inter-ministerial coordination.
The first initiative is the creation of Tourism and Cultural Economic Zones across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). These zones will leverage regional strengths to boost investment in local culture and tourism. The ministry is collaborating with state governments through Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to ensure projects align with local identities and priorities. Destinations like Obudu, Yankari, and Cocoa Beach are among those earmarked for development into world-class tourism attractions.
Secondly, the FEC approved the development of national tourism brands, officially recognizing the festive period known as ‘Detty December’ as a national tourism catalyst. The slang term, popularized to describe Nigeria’s vibrant end-of-year party season, now enjoys federal recognition as a major economic driver. Events like Homecoming East and Capital Vibes, along with festivals across Lagos and Abuja, have positioned December as a defining feature of Nigeria’s entertainment calendar. A newly approved Presidential Task Force on Detty December will coordinate ministries including aviation, interior, and power, to streamline logistics and enhance visitor experiences. The move aims to help Nigeria deliver a world-class tourism experience and strengthen Lagos and other cities as global cultural destinations.
The third approval is the establishment of the Presidential Council on Tourism Promotion and Investment, a restructured version of the former Presidential Council of Tourism inaugurated in 2023. Chaired by President Bola Tinubu and vice-chaired by Minister Musawa, the council will oversee inter-agency collaboration and attract foreign tourism investment. A dedicated secretariat within the ministry will support its operations. Officials say the council will help promote Nigeria’s image as a peaceful and stable destination, encouraging unity and fostering a stronger presence in global tourism markets.
