Nigeria's Green Leap: Spiro Unleashes 3 Flagship EV Bikes in Lagos!

Nigeria's journey towards electric mobility is gaining significant momentum, with Spiro, a prominent African EV manufacturer, at the forefront. The company recently hosted media executives and business stakeholders in Lagos to showcase its top-selling electric motorcycles and articulate its vision for the future of transport in Nigeria: electric, affordable, and accessible.

Flora Limukii, Spiro's Global Head of PR, emphasized the company's ambition to transform Africa's transport landscape. She highlighted Spiro's operations across eight African countries—four in West Africa and four in East Africa—and urged the press to educate Nigerians not only about Spiro's products but also the broader electric mobility ecosystem, including manufacturing, after-sales service, technological innovation, and environmental benefits. Limukii stated, “Media practitioners are central to showing the public how electric bikes can save money, generate jobs, and reduce emissions. You are partners in this journey.”

Rahul Gaur, Director of West Africa for Spiro, detailed the company’s impressive achievements and future goals. Spiro has deployed over 45,000 e-bikes across Africa, facilitated 22.9 million battery exchanges, and significantly reduced carbon emissions by over 44,000 tons, solidifying its position as the region's leading EV champion. In Nigeria, Spiro has already launched 1,000 electric bicycles in Ogun State and is rapidly expanding its presence in Delta, Cross River, and Kwara states. A key objective for Spiro is to expand its network of battery-swapping stations from 64 to 1,000 by January 2026, aiming to eliminate range anxiety for riders.

Gaur also highlighted that Spiro's customers have collectively traveled over 250 million kilometers in Africa, demonstrating the viability of EVs even in regions with infrastructural challenges and resulting in substantial fuel savings. Regarding cost-effectiveness, he clarified that Spiro's electric motorcycles are on par with petrol alternatives, being 40% cheaper to maintain. A 100km journey on a Spiro e-bike costs approximately ₦2,000 for power, compared to ₦3,000 or more for fuel-powered bikes.

Spiro is deeply invested in the African workforce, with over 95% of its employees being African, including more than 130 certified technicians. The company plans to double this figure as demand grows, supported by Spiro Academy, its training arm, which partners with universities to certify and train technicians for the expanding EV ecosystem. Another significant accomplishment is the establishment of over 500 battery-swapping stations across Africa, making Spiro the continent's largest operator and allowing battery swaps in minutes rather than hours of charging.

During the event, the Spiro management team addressed questions concerning Nigeria's energy and policy challenges, emphasizing their collaborations with state governments, power utilities, and retailers. They then showcased three flagship electric motorcycle models: the Ekon 450M3, a high-performance commuter bike built for efficiency and durability; the Ekon Alpha+, a premium model featuring a 7-inch LED display, tire pressure monitoring, and advanced performance; and the Ekon Collectable Limited Edition, which includes a special Davido-branded version for collectors and enthusiasts. Spiro also prides itself on its in-house developed tech stack, which includes real-time tracking, geofencing, and bike immobilization features, providing efficient operational management for governments and fleet owners while curbing theft or misuse.

Looking ahead, Spiro is committed to driving Nigeria’s EV future. The company is establishing new assembly plants in Nigeria and Rwanda to boost local manufacturing capacity and create employment. Its ambitious infrastructure plans include fast-charging points capable of charging bicycles for a 100km range in under 45 minutes. To further enhance convenience, Spiro is launching
