Nigeria's Auto Giant Embraces Crypto: Innoson Makes History with Zugacoin Payments

In a significant development for Nigeria's automotive and cryptocurrency sectors, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM), the nation's premier indigenous automaker, has announced that it will now accept Zugacoin as a legitimate means of payment. This groundbreaking partnership, sealed on Saturday at IVM’s factory in Nnewi, Anambra State, makes Innoson cars, buses, motorcycles, and other products accessible for purchase using Nigeria’s first locally owned cryptocurrency service. This move positions Innoson Group as the first known indigenous company in Nigeria to directly accept crypto payments, potentially paving the way for other businesses in the country to follow suit.
Zugacoin, officially known as SZC, was founded by Archbishop Sam Zuga of Benue state and launched on December 1, 2020. It rapidly gained social media attention with its stated mission to "alleviate poverty and unemployment in Africa." Archbishop Zuga achieved a notable milestone by becoming the first African to successfully list his cryptocurrency on the global crypto exchange CoinMarketCap. Beyond CoinMarketCap, Zugacoin is also tradable on several other platforms, including Coingeko, Uniswap, Indoex, Vindax, and Nellerabox. At the time of this announcement, Zugacoin was valued at approximately $98.93 (₦40,548.44).
The mechanics of purchasing Innoson vehicles with Zugacoin are expected to involve buyers directly paying into Innoson Group’s crypto wallet, should one be established. Subsequently, the auto manufacturer would have the option to convert the cryptocurrency into fiat currency, such as Naira or US dollars, via peer-to-peer (P2P) exchanges. Archbishop Sam Zuga proudly announced that Zugacoin recorded its first successful conversion into fiat currency on March 3, 2021, a process he celebrated as defying all odds. He emphasized his belief in divine support for the project, stating, "When God says YES nobody can say no. With God all things are possible. All things are possible to him that believes."
While the partnership holds promise for both Zugacoin and Innoson, its underlying motivations are subject to speculation. It could be a strategic initiative by Innoson to boost sales of its locally assembled vehicles by tapping into a new payment demographic. Alternatively, some observers suggest it might serve as a publicity stunt, drawing attention to both brands in a competitive market. Regardless of the intent, the deal faces significant challenges given the prevailing regulatory environment in Nigeria.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has maintained a stringent stance against cryptocurrencies, with Governor Godwin Emefiele famously describing dealers as "players in an electronic dark world." The CBN's directive, which prohibits banks and other financial institutions from facilitating crypto-related transactions, remains firmly in effect. This regulatory clampdown raises critical questions about how Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing intends to circumvent these constraints and successfully integrate Zugacoin as a payment method. Critics argue that, under the current CBN policies, Innoson's plans to accept Zugacoin for vehicle purchases may remain an unfulfilled ambition, a "pipe dream" as long as the apex bank's restrictive measures persist.
