Neil Young Ignites Firestorm, Slams Apple, Verizon & T-Mobile for Alleged Trump Regime Backing

Veteran Grammy-winning rocker Neil Young has publicly declared his opposition to the “fascist Trump regime” and the companies he alleges are providing it with financial support. In a fiery essay posted to his Neil Young Archives website on Thursday, January 29, Young specifically criticized Verizon, T-Mobile, and Apple for their perceived backing of President Trump and his administration.

Young initially expressed his frustration with Verizon, his mobile service provider, stating, “One idea I have to keep [my flip phone] is just to change services and drop Verizon service like a cold fish. It’s the money I give Verizon for my service that’s doing the damage! Not my old phone I bought years ago.” He considered switching to T-Mobile but quickly retracted this idea upon discovering T-Mobile had donated to Trump’s ballroom, where renovations had reportedly surged from $200 million to $400 million without clear accounting. This led Young to conclude, “So T-Mobile is apparently out.”

A long-standing political activist, Young has previously voiced his disapproval of ICE and President Trump, and last October, he pulled his music from Amazon due to CEO Jeff Bezos's alleged Trump ties. However, the recent fatal shootings of two American citizens, Renée Good on January 7 and Alex Pretti on January 24, by ICE agents in Minneapolis pushed him to take more decisive action. “One by one, I am cancelling all contact with each of them,” Young proclaimed, emphasizing his refusal to allow money earned from his music to support a regime he believes is connected to such killings. He reiterated his commitment to not support companies making large donations to the administration while people are being shot in America.

Young’s criticism extended to Apple CEO Tim Cook, whom he accused of “kissing ass” at a White House event. He threatened to sue Apple if his computer required a costly upgrade to function, stating he would stop upgrading anything from Apple and called his business manager to ensure this. Young challenged the notion that supporting Apple equates to supporting Trump and urged people to consider where their money goes when spent with large corporations.

As he continues to “re-assess everything [he is] doing,” Young indicated he would also consider the future of his relationship with Warner, his record company, promising to keep his followers updated. At the time of his statement, representatives for T-Mobile, Apple, Verizon, and Warner Music Group had not responded to Billboard’s requests for comment.
