The terrible accident occurred when a Nakuru K Service matatu collided head-on with a lorry just before 6pm on Thursday, May 8, at Chebonde/Arimi.

Confirming the tragic news, County Police Commander Michael Mwaura stated that 12 people from the matatu, including six men and six women, died on the spot.

All the bodies were taken to Molo Sub County Mortuary, while eight survivors were rushed to different health facilities for treatment.

Elburgon MCA Njuguna Mwaura said that the lorry, which was heading towards Molo, collided with the Nissan, which appeared to have had a tyre burst and lost control before the collision.

"The area is a blackspot and has been causing a lot of accidents in the recent past, leaving a trail of injuries and deaths. It’s a sad incident because we have lost many people in the accident, among them a student from DEB primary school Njoro," Mwaura told .

Mirria Waithera, a resident, said that the Nissan was heavily damaged, suggesting the two vehicles were travelling at high speed.

“I have seen a small child, a driver, and another young man still alive from the Nissan, but the rest were dead; the situation of the Nissan was bad," Waithera said.

John Mureithi, a passenger who had hiked the ill-fated lorry, said that he was heading to Molo when they had the accident after the Nissan rolled and hit their lorry.

He said that good Samaritans came to rescue them, as he had minor injuries, but the driver was taken to the hospital as he had serious injuries.

“Nissan had a tire burst and lost control and rolled before hitting us. The occupants of the Nissan, most of them died unfortunately," Mureithi narrated.

Photos from the scene show how serious the accident was as the matatu was extensively damaged, with a shattered windscreen, broken seats and windows.

The accident comes a few days after another horrific road crash occurred in the Nyalunya area along the Katito-Kendu Bay Road on Wednesday afternoon, May 7, resulting in the deaths of three men and leaving 15 others with critical injuries.

The collision involved a Bungoma Line matatu travelling from Migori to Kisumu and a lorry from Katito heading towards Homa Bay.

Eyewitnesses described the crash as catastrophic, with viewing images that showed the vehicles severely damaged.

The injured victims were swiftly transported to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Pap Onditi Hospital mortuary.
