A section of Kenyans had accused the DCI of selective justice after the detectives arrested 12 individuals linked to Were's murder in 14 days.

During an interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, May 14, Murkomen defended the swift action taken by the DCI in the ongoing probe into Were's murder.

The Interior CS noted that the media gave the case extensive coverage due to the late MP's political profile, pointing out that police officers frequently arrest suspects and solve cases that often go unreported.

"I think the case of Ong’ondo Were was very unfortunate, he is not the only one that has been investigated and persons charged expeditiously.
"Because Ong’ondo Were is an MP and was given prominence in reporting, there are many other cases that police investigate and charge people all over the country," Murkomen stated.

In Were's case, the Interior CS pointed out that DCI detectives managed to swiftly arrest key players in the assassination plot because of the call record triangulation.

He argued that the Kasipul MP's murder case was straightforward, given most of the suspects were captured on CCTV footage trailing the lawmaker.

"The issue of Ong’ondo Were was almost straightforward; the CCTV cameras quickly showed who was with him in Parliament, and it was easy to arrest all these people," he added.

Murkomen’s remarks came hours after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported progress in the investigation into the Kasipul MP’s shooting.

On the morning of Wednesday, May 14, the agency announced the arrest of the 12th suspect.

Amos Barasa Kasili was apprehended in Nairobi’s Kibera Darajani area.

Kasili, believed to work as a boda boda rider, is said to have transported the MP’s killer on his motorcycle.

On April 30, the day of the attack, Kasili was seen riding a Bajaj Boxer with registration number KMFZ 413W—the same motorcycle used by the attacker to follow Were’s car from outside the parliament buildings to the crime scene.
