South-East PDP Threatens to Leave if Scribe Demand Isn't Met

The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated, with the South East caucus threatening a mass exodus if their choice of Sunday Udeh-Okoye for the National Secretary position is not respected. Enugu State Governor and party leader in the zone, Dr. Peter Mbah, has urged members to unify their voices amid the ongoing dispute.
Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and former Imo State Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, have voiced their discontent, describing the party's handling of the situation as disrespectful and disruptive to the zone's interests. They highlighted the perceived trampling of the region's concerns and the failure to allow the zone to complete its tenure as secretary.
The South East Zonal Executive (ZEC), led by Chairman Chief Ali Odefa, convened a meeting at the Government House in Enugu to address the issue. The ZEC unanimously recommended Sunday Udeh-Okoye to complete the term of office, aligning with the directive from the National Working Committee (NWC) following its 600th meeting in Abuja.
The South East PDP expressed frustration over the repeated nomination of Udeh-Okoye since October 2023 and urged the NWC to promptly ratify his nomination. They also requested that Setonji Koshoedo effectively occupy the National Secretary's office in an acting capacity until Udeh-Okoye's ratification by the NEC.
The caucus warned that further delays in resolving the matter would compel them to reconsider their membership within the party, despite their long-standing loyalty. The South East has historically been a PDP stronghold, and the caucus emphasized their efforts to strengthen the party by attracting key opposition figures, particularly in Enugu.
Wabara emphasized the need to review the region's relationship with the party if the perceived trampling continues, suggesting that the South East is not taken seriously within the PDP. Udenwa echoed these sentiments, expressing hope that the issue would be resolved definitively to prevent future disregard.
