NAIRA HIKE SHOCKER: FG Skyrockets Nigerian Passport Fees to N200k!

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a significant upward review of fees for the Nigerian standard passport, which will take effect from September 1. This adjustment applies exclusively to passport applications made within Nigeria. ACI AS Akinlabi, the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO) of the NIS, issued a statement confirming the new fee structure on Thursday in Abuja.

Under the revised fee schedule, a 32-page passport with five-year validity will now cost N100,000 for applications processed within Nigeria. Similarly, a 64-page passport with 10-year validity will be N200,000. The NIS stated that these changes are necessary to uphold the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring continued accessibility of passport services for its citizens.

It is important to note that passport application fees for Nigerians residing in the diaspora will remain unchanged. Those applying from outside Nigeria will continue to pay $150 for the 32-page, five-year passport and $230 for the 64-page, 10-year passport. The service reiterated its commitment to balancing quality service delivery with the accessibility of passport services for all Nigerians.

This latest upward review in passport costs follows closely on the heels of a similar announcement made just a year prior. In August 2024, the federal government had previously approved an increase in the price of a 32-page, five-year passport booklet from N35,000 to N50,000. Concurrently, the 64-page, 10-year booklet saw its price rise from N70,000 to N100,000. These previous changes took effect on September 1, 2024. The then-spokesperson for the NIS, Kenneth Udo, had announced these adjustments, also citing efforts to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport system.
