Mohbad Family Legal Battle Deepens: Father Demands Prosecution of Daughter-in-law

Joseph Aloba, the grieving father of the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, famously known as Mohbad, has formally requested the Lagos State government to initiate criminal prosecution against his daughter-in-law, Omowunmi Aloba, and other individuals implicated in the Coroner’s Inquest into his son’s untimely death. This demand was articulated in a detailed letter penned by Aloba’s legal counsel, Wahab Shittu (SAN), and dispatched to the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro.
Central to the father's plea is the prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to Mohbad shortly before his demise. Furthermore, the lawyer urged the state authorities to pursue charges against all other persons present in Mohbad’s apartment at the time of his death, specifically those who facilitated the auxiliary nurse’s presence or failed to ensure prompt medical attention at a recognized healthcare facility.
The Coroner, Magistrate Taofikat Shotobi, delivered a significant verdict on July 11, 2025, unequivocally stating that the auxiliary nurse's actions were both “unlawful and professionally negligent.” The Coroner's findings specifically recommended the criminal prosecution of Ogedengbe for medical misadventure or negligence, highlighting her administration of an injection without a valid doctor’s prescription. Additionally, the Coroner assigned responsibility to Mohbad’s wife for choosing to treat him at home rather than seeking immediate medical care from a hospital.
Despite these clear judicial findings and strong recommendations from the Coroner’s verdict, over two months have elapsed without any charges being filed by the Lagos State government against the individuals named. This lack of prosecutorial action has deeply concerned Aloba’s lawyer, who has expressed dismay over the authorities' inaction despite the clear judicial pronouncements.
In a direct appeal, the lawyer urged the Attorney-General to exercise his prosecutorial powers by filing charges against the implicated parties within a stringent 14-day period. This urgency stems from the high sensitivity of the case and the considerable public attention it has garnered. Shittu emphasized his client’s profound distress, stating, “Our client, as a bereaved father who seeks justice, is deeply troubled by the fact that, despite the clear indictments contained in the Coroner’s Verdict, no prosecutorial steps have been taken against the mentioned individuals since the verdict was delivered on July 11, 2025.”
As an alternative measure, should the Attorney-General’s Office not be inclined to prosecute the mentioned individuals within the stipulated timeframe, the lawyer respectfully requested that a fiat be granted to his firm within the same period. This fiat, in accordance with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, would empower them to prosecute the matter on behalf of the State, ensuring that justice is pursued.
