Scandal Rocks Nigerian Music: Naira Marley Under Fire as New Evidence Emerges in Mohbad Case
Musician Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has finally presented his version of events concerning the death of his former signee, Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad. Mohbad died on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the age of 27. Following his acquittal in February by a Magistrate's Court in Yaba, Lagos, alongside music promoter Sam Larry (Samson Balogun), Primeboy (Ibrahim Owodunni), and Mohbad's former manager, Babatunde Opere, Naira Marley released a video documentary on YouTube. The Coroner's Court in Ikorodu, however, recommended the criminal prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to Mohbad without a doctor's prescription, citing gross negligence and ruling her actions as unlawful and professionally negligent.
Naira Marley, who rose to prominence in the Nigerian music scene in 2018 and signed Mohbad and Zinoleesky to Marlian Music in 2019, used his documentary to offer behind-the-scenes insights. He alleged that on June 7, 2020, he learned Mohbad was using an illegal substance called 'Ice', which he later understood to be crack. Marley stated he advised Mohbad against its use, who attributed it to stress, and claimed he did not force Mohbad into anything.
