Microsoft's AI Data Center Dominance: Nadella's Strategic Reminder to OpenAI

Microsoft has commenced the deployment of its first massive AI system, characterized by Nvidia as an AI “factory,” a development shared by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella via social media. This marks the initial step in a broader strategy to integrate numerous such Nvidia AI factories across Microsoft Azure’s global data centers, specifically engineered to support OpenAI workloads. Microsoft has committed to deploying “hundreds of thousands of Blackwell Ultra GPUs” as these sophisticated systems are rolled out worldwide.
Each of these advanced AI systems comprises a cluster of over 4,600 Nvidia GB300 rack computers. These machines are equipped with the highly sought-after Blackwell Ultra GPU chip and are interconnected using Nvidia’s high-speed networking technology, InfiniBand. Nvidia’s strategic acquisition of Mellanox for $6.9 billion in 2019 provided the company with a significant advantage, securing its position in the InfiniBand market alongside its dominance in AI chips.
The timing of this announcement by Microsoft is particularly noteworthy. It closely follows recent high-profile data center agreements made by OpenAI, Microsoft’s partner and occasional competitor, with both Nvidia and AMD. By some estimates, OpenAI has accumulated approximately $1 trillion in commitments for building its own data centers in 2025, with CEO Sam Altman indicating more expansions are on the horizon. Microsoft’s public declaration serves to underscore its existing infrastructure capabilities, boasting over 300 data centers spread across 34 countries. The company asserts that these facilities are “uniquely positioned” to “meet the demands of frontier AI today.”
These colossal AI systems are designed not only for current needs but also to handle the next generation of AI models, which are expected to feature “hundreds of trillions of parameters.” Further details regarding Microsoft’s ramp-up to serve increasingly complex AI workloads are anticipated later this month, with Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott scheduled to speak at TechCrunch Disrupt, taking place from October 27 to October 29 in San Francisco.
