Meta's Threads Surges to Half a Billion Users, Unveils Powerful New Feed Controls

Meta's text-based social media platform, Threads, has achieved a significant milestone, now boasting 500 million monthly active users. This accomplishment comes almost three years after its initial launch as a direct alternative to Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter), demonstrating its growing influence in the digital landscape.

In an announcement made on a recent Tuesday, Meta emphasized that this milestone is intrinsically linked to its broader commitment to developing platforms that genuinely cater to the needs of internet users globally. The company attributes much of Threads' evolution and success to continuous improvements based on invaluable user feedback. "This growth is driven by community groups of people showing up around the conversations they care about, from books to basketball to parenting to music," Meta stated. These vibrant communities have been instrumental in shaping Threads into its current form, and Meta is dedicated to introducing new tools to further enhance their meaningfulness and dynamism.

This impressive growth to 500 million users follows a previous announcement eight months prior, in October 2023, when the platform reported reaching 150 million monthly active users. Providing further context to this rapid expansion, Meta observed that an increasing number of individuals are now directly opening Threads, indicating a stronger user engagement and retention. Geographically, notable adoption spikes have been recorded in Asia, particularly in South Korea and Japan, where user time spent on the platform has surged by 80% and 130% respectively, compared to the previous year.

To complement its latest milestone, Meta has rolled out new customization and community features designed to empower users. Among these is "Your Algo," an innovative tool that grants users private control over the conversations displayed in their feeds. This new feature works in conjunction with "Dear Algo," which was introduced in early January, allowing users to provide direct feedback to the Threads algorithm about content preferences. "Your Algo" further refines this control by enabling users to specify whether they wish to see more or less of certain topics, with the option to set the duration of these requests for one, three, or seven days. Meta clarified that these requests are private and can be managed efficiently from a unified hub encompassing both "Dear Algo" and "Your Algo."

Meta has indicated that "Your Algo" is merely the commencement of a series of new feature rollouts, with future updates on Threads slated to be developed based on continued user feedback to ensure sustained platform adoption. The initial rollout of "Your Algo" began in key markets including the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Additionally, the recently unveiled "live chats" feature is projected to become available to all users by July, promising further enhancements to community interaction on the platform.
