Megan Moroney's 'Cloud 9' Album Ascends to No. 1, Making History on Billboard Charts!

In a historic week for country music, Megan Moroney's album "Cloud 9" has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, while Ella Langley's single "Choosin' Texas" has simultaneously returned to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. This achievement, marking the charts dated March 7, makes Moroney and Langley the first women who primarily record country music to rule Billboard's premier all-genre song and album charts concurrently, a milestone dating back to the Hot 100's inception in August 1958 and the Billboard 200's regular weekly publication in March 1956.
Moroney expressed immense joy over the chart news, stating, "Not to be cliche but I’m on cloud 9!" She extended gratitude to her fans, crediting them for embracing the album and turning a dream into reality. "Cloud 9" earned an impressive 147,000 equivalent album units in the United States in the week ending February 26, according to Luminate. This marks the biggest week for a country album by a woman in nearly two years. Following this success, Moroney is preparing to embark on "THE CLOUD 9 TOUR," an arena tour kicking off in May and running through early October, with scheduled stops across the United States, Canada, and Europe.
"Cloud 9" is Moroney’s third studio album, featuring collaborations with Kacey Musgraves and Ed Sheeran. It follows her previous efforts, 2023’s "Lucky" (No. 38 on Billboard 200) and 2024’s "Am I Okay?" (No. 9). The album’s debut unit count was comprised of 78,000 album sales, marking Moroney’s best sales week, and 69,000 SEA units, equivalent to 71.54 million on-demand official streams—her best streaming week. Sales were significantly boosted by the availability of five vinyl variants, three CD variants, and four deluxe boxed sets. Prior to the album, Moroney saw success with tracks like "6 Months Later," which reached No. 29 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 in January, along with "Beautiful Things," "Wish I Didn't," and the title track, all charting on Hot Country Songs. "Cloud 9" is the first country album by a woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since Beyoncé’s "Cowboy Carter" in April 2024, and joins a select group of seven country albums by five women to top the chart in the last decade.
Ella Langley's single "Choosin' Texas" surged back to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for its second week, marking a significant milestone for the artist. This track became the first Hot 100 No. 1 for Langley, and also for Miranda Lambert, who is among the co-writers and co-producers. Langley and Lambert co-penned the song with Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor, and co-produced it with Ben West. "Choosin' Texas" serves as a preview for Langley's upcoming album, "Dandelion," slated for release on April 10.
The simultaneous No. 1 achievements by Megan Moroney and Ella Langley represent a unique moment in chart history. In only four other instances have country titles topped both the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts together, and never before by two women in the same week. These select frames include: March 7, Cloud 9, Megan Moroney / “Choosin’ Texas,” Ella Langley; October 26, 2024, Beautifully Broken, Jelly Roll / “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey; August 31, 2024, F-1 Trillion, Post Malone / “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey; July 22, 2023, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), Taylor Swift / “Last Night,” Morgan Wallen; and April 30, 1977, Hotel California, Eagles / “Southern Nights,” Glen Campbell. Both "Cloud 9" and "Choosin' Texas" are Sony Music Entertainment releases, showcasing a shared achievement for the label.
Beyond the historic country milestones, the latest Billboard 200 chart also saw other notable entries. Bad Bunny’s "DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS" fell to No. 2 with 85,000 equivalent album units. Hilary Duff made a return to the top 10 after more than a decade with "luck… or something" debuting at No. 3, earning 84,000 units. Baby Keem secured his highest-charting album yet as "Ca$ino" debuted at No. 4 with 72,000 units. Other movements in the top 10 included Morgan Wallen’s "I’m the Problem" at No. 5, Don Toliver’s "OCTANE" at No. 6, Olivia Dean’s "The Art of Loving" at No. 7, J. Cole’s "The Fall-Off" at No. 8, Taylor Swift’s "The Life of a Showgirl" holding steady at No. 9, and Mumford & Sons’ "Prizefighter" entering at No. 10 with nearly 44,000 units, marking their sixth top 10 effort.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, measured in equivalent album units compiled by Luminate. These units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit is equivalent to one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 2,500 ad-supported or 1,000 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. Luminate, as the independent data provider, conducts thorough reviews and authentication of all data submissions to ensure accuracy and integrity in the weekly chart rankings.
