Matt Damon's Emotional Revelation: The Masterpiece That Still Brings Him to Tears

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are reuniting on screen for the first time since their 2023 sports drama Air, headlining Netflix's upcoming crime thriller The Rip. Inspired by true events, the film casts Damon as Miami police officer Lieutenant Dane Dumars and Affleck as Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne. The dynamic duo finds themselves embroiled in a high-intensity situation that could permanently alter their lives.
Directed by Joe Carnahan, known for films like Narc and Smokin' Aces, The Rip follows Dumars and Byrne as partners leading a team of Miami police officers. Their mission is to investigate and seize drug money from a stash house. A crucial tip leads them to the discovery of a staggering $24 million hidden within the walls, transforming the expert crew into a mire of suspicion and mistrust, especially as external forces become aware of this unexpected find. The film boasts a strong supporting cast including Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, Sasha Calle, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
In a recent interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub, Affleck and Damon, who have maintained a friendship for over 40 years and share an Academy Award for Good Will Hunting, delved into various topics. They discussed what makes a great interview, their favorite films from iconic directors, and even teased a potential return of the DunKings.
The pair shared their appreciation for thoughtful interviewers, specifically praising Howard Stern. Damon noted that Stern's luxury of extended interview times allows for deeper conversations. Affleck echoed this sentiment, likening a short, truncated interview to delivering a single line in a movie: incredibly difficult to convey everything without the chance to get comfortable and 'vamp' into the discussion.
The conversation shifted to their cinematic preferences, starting with Christopher Nolan. Matt Damon expressed his love for Inception and recounted a deeply moving experience re-watching Interstellar. He explained that initially being in the film and reading the script close to its release prevented him from fully experiencing it, but a decade later, the theme of a father missing his daughter's life resonated profoundly, bringing him to tears. Ben Affleck, while loving all of Nolan's films, declared Oppenheimer as his top choice, stating it's hard to place any other movie above it.
The interview continued with legendary director Steven Spielberg, prompting a lighthearted sigh from Damon due to Spielberg's extensive and varied filmography. Both actors agreed on the perfection of Jaws. Affleck cited it as the first film he saw that truly embedded itself in his consciousness, making it his definitive choice. Damon also confirmed that Jaws frequently appears in his top five films. Other Spielberg classics like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler’s List, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Lincoln were also praised.
Finally, they tackled Stanley Kubrick's filmography, which Affleck noted was comparatively smaller. Both Damon and Affleck quickly settled on 2001: A Space Odyssey as their favorite, with Affleck highlighting its foundational influence on virtually every science fiction space movie that followed. Damon also mentioned Dr. Strangelove for its comedic brilliance, admitting it makes him laugh harder. Regarding the popular DunKings collaboration, Ben Affleck remained coy, stating he honestly doesn't know if they will return but added, "never say never." The Rip is now available to stream on Netflix.
