Marvel Drops Exclusive Bombshell: 'X-Men '97' Confirms Season 3 & 4 Premiere Dates

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) television landscape has undergone a significant evolution since its inception in 2021 with groundbreaking shows like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Five years later, this universe has expanded into a more ambitious and diverse offering, featuring ongoing narrative series such as Loki and the highly anticipated Daredevil: Born Again. Beyond the main continuity, independent animated series like Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Eyes of Wakanda are also enriching different facets of the universe, demonstrating the breadth of Marvel's storytelling.

Among the animated series, X-Men '97 has emerged as the most popular Marvel animated series in recent years. After its first season captivated a global audience in 2024, the momentum continued with the launch of Season 2 this year. Fans of the beloved X-Men revival have much to anticipate regarding its future, as the show has been officially renewed not only for Season 3 but also for Season 4, with production on the fourth season already underway.

Collider's Maggie Lovitt recently spoke with Marvel Studios Head of TV and Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, during a screening for the X-Men '97 Season 2 finale. When queried about the wait time for Season 3, Winderbaum promptly confirmed that "Season 3 is going to come out next year and Season 4 the year after that," definitively placing their premieres in 2027 and 2028, respectively. Winderbaum expressed a personal desire to accelerate production, stating, "Even a year feels too long. I remember watching these every single day after school..." He also acknowledged the modern convenience of rewatching episodes on streaming platforms. While the series' fate beyond Season 4 remains undecided, Winderbaum conveyed his commitment to the franchise, remarking, "X-Men was a constant element of my life growing up, and I just want to make as many [seasons] as fast as possible for people to see."

Regarding the episode count for future seasons, the first season of X-Men '97 comprised 10 episodes, while Season 2 featured nine. The total number of episodes for Seasons 3 and 4 has not yet been disclosed. Lovitt raised the possibility of increasing the episode order, reminiscent of X-Men: The Animated Series which had seasons with 13 or even 19 episodes. However, Winderbaum expressed reservations about this, citing the new business models and limitations of streaming. He explained that increasing episode counts often means longer waits between seasons. He generally favors releasing seasons sooner, even if it requires reserving some storylines for subsequent installments, balancing fan anticipation with production realities. Viewers can currently stream the first two seasons of X-Men '97 on Disney+.
