Maraga writes to Police IG, Murkomen after security withdrawn

Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga has raised the alarm over the withdrawal of his security.

Maraga has written to the security chiefs demanding the return of his bodyguards as required by law.

He has accused the state of attempting to intimidate him for joining protesters in a march on Wednesday that was held in remembrance of those killed by police in last year's anti-finance bill protests.

Not one to hold his tongue in the face of an injustice, Maraga on Friday accused the state of seeking to intimidate him by withdrawing his security.

Speaking to Citizen TV and in letters posted to his social media, Maraga flagged the withdrawal of his security on Wednesday and Thursday.

Coinciding with his participation in a march held in the city centre in remembrance of those killed in anti-finance bill protests last year.

"His participation in protests that later degenerated into looting and lawlessness not only undermined his dignity but also sent the wrong message to a generation looking up to him for guidance and inspiration," National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula noted.

Maraga, who has expressed interest in contesting the presidency in 2027, has read mischief into the developments coming soon after he expressed solidarity with the youth against police brutality, going so far as to call for the resignation, arrest and prosecution of police chiefs following the death of Albert Ojwang in police custody.

In letters to the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and the Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Maraga states that he has been stripped of two bodyguards and a driver.

One of the two bodyguards was advised not to report for duty by Maraga's side on Wednesday and later sent for training, while the other two, Maraga states, were withdrawn the following day.

Maraga, who states the three have been attached to him for almost five years following his retirement in January of 2021, has demanded that his security be restored in keeping with the provisions of the Retirement Benefits Act.
