Man Utd Legend's Rollercoaster Week: Sacked From Management, Lands Shock New Gig!

Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick, who was previously linked with the managerial hotseat at Old Trafford, has taken on a new role as a UEFA technical observer. Carrick, axed as Middlesbrough boss in June, was specifically tasked with analyzing the high-profile Champions League clash between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, a match won by PSG thanks to a late goal from Goncalo Ramos. Drawing upon his experience as a Champions League winner in 2008, Carrick provided tactical insights, noting that the game was decided by exploiting the space behind the high defensive lines employed by both teams.
Carrick elaborated on training methods for such a game plan, suggesting simple passing sequences with mannequins to practice timing runs and staying onside for through balls. He also advocated for a possession-based game with an end zone where defenders are restricted, emphasizing the importance of running into space to receive passes. Key elements, according to Carrick, include players understanding the triggers for runs, knowing where to pass, and delivering the ball 'in front' of a player rather than 'at' them, highlighting the need for visual awareness and willingness to run into available space.
The discussion around Manchester United's managerial position continues, with current manager Ruben Amorim facing intense pressure following a dire start to the season that sees the club languishing in 14th place. Alongside Carrick, other prominent coaches have been linked to the role, including Premier League bosses Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola, and Fabian Hurzeler. SunSport also exclusively revealed former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate as a candidate, though he reportedly harbors significant reservations about taking the job, concerned about not being afforded sufficient time to implement changes and turn the club's fortunes around. Manchester United is set to host newly-promoted Sunderland at Old Trafford on Saturday, with the Black Cats currently sitting four points ahead in fifth position.
In a related development concerning former Manchester United players in management, Lee Martin, signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2003, has been sacked from his first managerial position at Welling United. Martin, who made only a single appearance for the Red Devils during his playing career, took charge of the Isthmian League Premier Division side in May. However, after a disappointing start yielding just three wins in 13 games, Welling United relieved him of his duties. The club released a statement expressing gratitude for his efforts and professionalism while confirming the parting of ways, with former assistant Paul Barnes taking over on an interim basis.
Martin's playing career saw him make 200 appearances for Ipswich, followed by stints at Millwall, Gillingham, Exeter, and Dover before his retirement at Ramsgate in 2025. His managerial win rate of 23.1 percent is only marginally worse than that of Ruben Amorim at Manchester United. Despite the comparable performance metrics, Amorim reportedly maintains the full backing of the club's hierarchy amidst the ever-mounting pressure on his tenure.
