Makerfield By-Election Sparks Political Firestorm as Burnham Clashes with Farage

The upcoming Makerfield by-election has become a focal point of political activity and controversy, with candidates from various parties facing scrutiny and engaging in high-stakes campaigning. The by-election was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons stepped down, creating an opportunity for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to return to Westminster and potentially challenge Labour's national leadership.
Reform UK's candidate, Robert Kenyon, a newly elected Wigan councillor, has faced significant criticism over alleged social media posts. Campaign group Hope Not Hate reported on two X (formerly Twitter) accounts believed to belong to Kenyon, one of which was suspended and another deleted. These accounts allegedly contained misogynistic posts, a transphobic post, and remarks concerning Covid conspiracy theories. Reform UK has defended Kenyon, stating their full backing and suggesting the comments were made before he entered politics. A spokesperson emphasized that Kenyon is "not a polished, professional politician" and will be a "straight-talking, effective voice." Conversely, a Labour spokesperson asserted that Kenyon's posts indicate he is "not fit to represent Makerfield."
The Green Party also experienced a swift change in its candidacy. Chris Kennedy, announced as the Green Party candidate, withdrew from the race just nine hours later, citing "personal and family reasons." This withdrawal followed reports by The Times regarding social media posts by Kennedy, which allegedly described an attack on Jewish volunteer ambulances in north London as "total bull**** to keep the false flag flying." He also reportedly shared content from a "proud ethno-nationalist." The Green Party stated that these posts do not reflect their views, and Kennedy apologized for the offense caused, subsequently deleting them. The party has since reopened nominations, aiming to offer voters a choice focused on issues like the cost of living, affordable housing, and public services, while also seeking to prevent Reform UK from winning the seat.
The Liberal Democrats have put forward Stockport councillor Jake Austin as their candidate. Austin, who was born in the Makerfield constituency and previously contested the Greater Manchester mayoral election against Andy Burnham, expressed pride in his selection. He pledged to "champion the issues that matter most to people," specifically highlighting the cost of living, environmental protection, and support for local high streets and businesses. The Liberal Democrats criticized Labour's "infighting" and suggested that trust in politics has been undermined during a period when the British public has been significantly impacted by the cost of living crisis. They positioned Austin as a committed local champion, not driven by national leadership ambitions.
Andy Burnham, the Labour candidate, formally launched his campaign with a thinly veiled pitch for national leadership, describing a vote for him as "a vote to change Labour." He articulated his ambition to reshape the party, drawing it back to its roots and ensuring electoral success. Burnham outlined national policy views including reprioritizing a £39bn affordable housing fund exclusively for council homes, indicating potential changes to immigration rules concerning indefinite leave to remain, and advocating for a proportional electoral system in the next Labour manifesto. He criticized Labour for being "too London-centric" and called for "maximum devolution of power." His campaign launch comes after recent challenging election results for Labour, and he emphasized that "British politics needs to change its tired old script." Pollsters suggest Burnham's candidacy significantly boosts Labour's chances, though Reform UK's strong performance in local elections in the constituency indicates a tough contest.
A significant controversy also erupted involving Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, and his entourage, during an unannounced visit to The Hamlet Wigan CIC community cafe, a center for adults with special needs. Gemma Crompton, the director, accused Farage and his team, including Robert Kenyon, of creating an "intimidating and overwhelming" atmosphere due to their large presence, security, and media crews. The visit coincided with a non-campaign event where Andy Burnham was present to celebrate trainees receiving their Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. Crompton emphasized that the venue was not intended for political campaigning and alleged that filming and photography occurred despite prohibitory signs. She formally requested an apology from Farage and assurances against similar future incidents. Reform UK, however, described the visit as "completely ad hoc and non-political," claiming no photographs were taken by their photographers and expressing surprise at the letter, stating that no concerns were raised during their interaction with Crompton.
The Makerfield by-election is shaping up to be a critical political battleground, not only determining a new Member of Parliament but also serving as a testing ground for national political narratives and ambitions. The various controversies and the strong contenders underscore the high stakes involved for all parties.
