Mahesh Manjrekar Attributes Chhaava's Success Primarily to Maharashtra

Vicky Kaushal's film, Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar, has achieved significant success, grossing ₹800 crore worldwide. The film portrays the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and has resonated strongly with audiences, particularly in Maharashtra. In a recent interview with Mirchi Marathi, filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar discussed the film's triumph, emphasizing the critical role of the Maharashtra audience.
Mahesh Manjrekar credited the success of Chhaava to the character of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, rather than solely to Vicky Kaushal's performance. He noted that audiences came to see the historical figure, which is why the film resonated so well. Manjrekar stated, "Vicky Kaushal is a very fine actor. His film Chhaava collected ₹800 crore. But Vicky Kaushal can never say that people came to see him. Because then they would have come to see the previous five films as well. The audience came to see your character. His previous five films did not work."
Manjrekar highlighted the crucial role Maharashtra played in the film's success, asserting that the state has, in a way, saved the Hindi film industry. He mentioned that 80% of the film's credit goes to Maharashtra, with 90% specifically attributed to Pune. Manjrekar emphasized, "So my Maharashtra has saved the Hindi film industry, remember this. Today, Chhaava is doing well, and 80 percent of its credit goes to Maharashtra. In fact, 90 percent of the credit goes to Pune, and the rest goes to other parts of Maharashtra. Maharashtra can save the industry."
Chhaava, a historical action drama, surpassed ₹600 crore in India alone and stars Rashmika Mandanna as Sambhaji Maharaj's wife, Yesubai Bhonsale. The film also features Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta in significant roles. Dinesh Vijan produced the film under Maddock Films.
Looking ahead, Vicky Kaushal is slated to appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War, alongside Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor. The success of Chhaava marks a significant achievement for Kaushal and the team, highlighting the appeal of historical dramas and the importance of regional audiences in the film industry.
