Rashmika Mandanna on Deepika Padukone's Flexible Shift Debate

Actor Rashmika Mandanna has recently contributed to the ongoing debate surrounding working hours in the film industry, a discussion significantly amplified by Deepika Padukone's reported exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's film 'Spirit'. Mandanna stressed the importance of transparent discussions about working conditions occurring before contracts are signed, stating, "Today the whole country is debating about flexible hours, but that is for discussion amongst the teams and figuring out what works for them. It’s their personal choices." She emphasized the need for clear communication between all parties involved in a film production.

Sharing her extensive experience across various Indian film industries, Mandanna highlighted notable differences in work schedules. She noted that in South Indian cinema, including Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil industries, typical working hours are from 9 am to 6 pm. In contrast, the Hindi film industry often operates on a 9 am to 9 pm shift. Despite these variations, Mandanna asserted her openness to both schedules, explaining that her adaptability is dictated by the requirements of her specific film projects.

Mandanna also shed light on the more extreme demands sometimes placed on actors. She revealed scenarios where shoots can extend far beyond conventional 12-hour shifts, stating, "Some films you can start 9 am to 9 pm, but they carry on till the next day, so you’re working like 36 hours. There are much worse scenarios happening where you are working 2-3 days without going home." These revelations underscore the intense and often physically demanding nature of film production.

The debate gained significant traction following reports that Deepika Padukone withdrew from 'Spirit', an anticipated action drama with Prabhas and directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga (with whom Rashmika also collaborated on 'Animal'). Padukone had reportedly stipulated specific working hours in her contract, possibly influenced by her recent transition into motherhood. These conditions allegedly did not align with the demanding schedule required for 'Spirit', particularly its action-heavy sequences, leading to her departure. Subsequently, Triptii Dimri, who gained prominence in Vanga’s 'Animal', was announced as the new female lead for 'Spirit'.

The ongoing dialogue has prompted actors and filmmakers to reevaluate current industry practices and explore more sustainable work arrangements that prioritize actor well-being while balancing production demands. Other industry figures, such as actor Vikrant Massey, have also weighed in, supporting Deepika's request for fixed hours, stating she deserved such considerations. Rashmika Mandanna's comments further highlight the need for balanced conversations and clear contractual agreements to navigate the complexities of film production schedules.
