Kajol Recalls Ajay Devgn-YRF Box Office Dispute

Actress Kajol recently revisited one of Bollywood’s most significant box office clashes, the 2012 standoff between her husband Ajay Devgn’s film, Son of Sardaar, and Yash Raj Films’ Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Given her deep personal and professional connections to both sides of the dispute, Kajol openly admitted to feeling conflicted and utterly helpless during the tumultuous period.
In a candid interview with Lallantop, Kajol delved into the emotional complexities of the situation. She described fights as inherently difficult, particularly when they persist unresolved for extended periods. Reflecting on the specific incident, she stated, “At that point, when you have a situation like that in front of you, both parties were standing for themselves. As somebody who was connected to both sides, I felt helpless.” She further added a poignant observation on resolution, suggesting, “You have to wait for time to pass so that the feelings subside. So that things can become ok again,” implying that the passage of time has indeed begun to mend the fissures created by the clash.
Beyond the immediate conflict, Kajol also shared a broader philosophical outlook on the nature of change, asserting, “Change is change, it is neither good nor bad. It is written somewhere that change is eternal. It is the only thing which is constant.” This perspective underscores her understanding of the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of the film industry.
The root of the controversy traced back to Diwali 2012, when Ajay Devgn’s production house filed a complaint with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against Yash Raj Films. Devgn’s team accused YRF of engaging in monopolistic practices, alleging that the production giant leveraged its dominant position to secure a disproportionate number of screens for Jab Tak Hai Jaan, the last directorial venture of the late Yash Chopra, thereby limiting exhibition opportunities for Son of Sardaar.
Currently, Kajol was seen in Vishal Furia’s Maa, which did not perform well at the box office. Her upcoming project is the film Sarzameen, where she will share the screen with Ibrahim Ali Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, marking her continued presence in the diverse landscape of Indian cinema.
