Luxury Rovos Rail Returns to Angola with 54 Tourists
The renowned Rovos Rail luxury train, celebrated as one of the most opulent in the world, recently completed its sixth expedition to Angola, carrying 54 tourists from diverse continents, including the United States of America, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Asia, and Europe. Originating from Dar-es-Salan, Tanzania, this journey marked another significant step in showcasing Angola's rich natural and cultural heritage to international visitors.
The expedition commenced its Angolan leg in Luau, Moxico province, where tourists were immersed in the vibrant local culture. A special exhibition of the Tchokwe people's culture, featuring traditional dance, music, and gastronomy, was organized, providing a deep insight into the region's artistic and culinary traditions.
Following their visit to Luau, the luxury train proceeded to the municipality of Cuito, the capital of Bié Province. Here, the group visited the poignant memorial of the Battle of Cuito, located in the commune of Cunje, a site of historical significance where over seven thousand bodies are interred. Nicholas Cophil, a South African tourist aboard the train, expressed his admiration for the initiative, emphasizing that such visits underscore Angola's safety and potential for fostering a thriving tourism industry. Isaías Cristovão Lucondo, the administrator of Cunje, further underscored the importance of these foreign visits, noting their crucial role in promoting the country's image globally and highlighting Bié province's significant tourism and cultural potential, envisioning it as a future cornerstone of national tourism.
The Rovos Rail's comprehensive itinerary along the Benguela Railway (CFB) and through the Lobito corridor is designed to allow tourists to explore various Angolan regions, appreciating their natural beauty and diverse cultures. Beyond Cuito and Luau, the journey also includes planned stops in the city of Huambo before concluding in the southern province of Benguela. These expeditions have become more regular since 2022, with the first tourist operation by Rovos Rail in Angola having taken place in 2019, signifying a growing commitment to developing Angola's international tourism sector.
