Luxury on Rails: Rovos Train Delivers Tourists to Angola's Wonders
The Rovos Rail, renowned as one of the world's most luxurious tourist trains, has significantly contributed to Angola's burgeoning tourism industry through its repeated expeditions across the country. For the sixth time, the train, originating from Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, traversed the Benguela Railway (CFB), bringing aboard 54 tourists from diverse nationalities and continents, including the United States, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Brazil, as well as Asian and European visitors.
These tourist voyages aim to showcase Angola's natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, emphasizing the nation's growing potential as a safe and attractive destination for international visitors. The train's itinerary includes visits to various provinces connected by the CFB, such as Moxico, Bié, Huambo, and Benguela. On one recent visit, tourists disembarked in the municipality of Cuito, capital of the Bié Province, to explore its unique natural and cultural treasures. A significant part of their visit in Bié included a solemn visit to the memorial of the Battle of Cuito, located in the commune of Cunje, a site where over seven thousand bodies are interred, offering a poignant historical experience.
Local officials and visitors alike underscored the importance of these expeditions. Nicholas Cophil, a South African tourist, affirmed that the initiative demonstrates Angola's safety and suitability for fostering a robust tourism industry. Similarly, Isaías Cristovão Lucondo, the administrator of Cunje, highlighted the continuous visits by foreign citizens as crucial for promoting Angola's image internationally. He emphasized that such actions significantly amplify the province's tourism and cultural potential, suggesting it could evolve into a strong national tourism industry.
During their journey, particularly in Luau, the presence of the tourists was celebrated with a vibrant exhibition of the Tchokwe people's culture, featuring traditional dance, music, and gastronomy, providing an authentic cultural immersion. The Rovos Rail first commenced its purely tourist expeditions to Angola in 2019, and from 2022, it has operated on a more regular basis, allowing more travelers to explore the varied cultures and landscapes along the scenic Lobito corridor, culminating in the southern province of Benguela.
