Lilo & Stitch Remake Achieves Box Office Success, Director Comments on Franchise Future

The live-action adaptation of Disney's "Lilo & Stitch" has emerged as a significant box office success, drawing widespread acclaim and strong viewership. The film has already surpassed $300 million domestically and is on track to reach the $350 million milestone, marking a much-needed triumph for Disney, especially when compared to other recent remakes like "Snow White."

Produced on a reported budget of $100 million, the "Lilo & Stitch" remake has demonstrated impressive returns, earning over six times its production cost within just fifteen days of its release. Its strong performance continued into its third weekend, with the film collecting a robust $9.3 million on its third Friday in North America. This brought its domestic total at that point to $312.6 million.

This strong third-Friday earning positions "Lilo & Stitch" with the second-highest third-Friday gross for Memorial Day releases, trailing only "Top Gun: Maverick." Other notable films in the top five for this specific metric include the live-action "Aladdin," "The Little Mermaid," and "Bruce Almighty." Projections for its third three-day weekend in North America estimate earnings between $33 million and $36 million, indicating it will likely maintain the top spot at the domestic box office despite new competition.

Globally, "Lilo & Stitch" is also making significant waves. Its overseas collection stood at $334.5 million, which, combined with its domestic earnings, brought the film's worldwide gross to an impressive $647.1 million. The movie is poised to cross the $650 million milestone and is on a trajectory to potentially become the highest-grossing film of the year, both domestically and worldwide. The film, released on May 21, 2025, with a runtime of 108 minutes, was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and features Chris Sanders reprising his voice role as Stitch, with Maia Kealoha playing Lilo. The screenplay was penned by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, Mike Van Waes, Chris Sanders, and Dean DeBlois.

Given this massive success, discussions about a continuation of the "Lilo & Stitch" story are inevitably underway. Director Dean Fleischer Camp has expressed conditional interest in returning for a sequel, stating he would do so "if it was the right idea" and not solely due to market demand. He also floated the intriguing possibility of developing an animated spin-off, potentially as an episodic or limited series that would adhere to the continuity of the live-action movie.

This idea of an animated series harks back to the original 2002 animated movie, which was followed by several sequel films and a TV series. That series centered on Lilo and Stitch discovering Stitch's creator Jumba Jookiba's hundreds of other genetic experiments, affectionately termed Stitch's "cousins," which had been released upon Hawaii. A new animated series, following the live-action continuity, might also explore different styles of animation to distinguish itself from previous properties.

However, considering the substantial box office returns of the 2025 film, Disney might lean towards a traditional theatrical sequel. Should Fleischer Camp not helm this potential sequel, the studio might look to adapt existing storylines from the animated sequels, such as "Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch" or "Stitch! The Movie."

Regardless of the format—be it a theatrical sequel or an animated series—any future "Lilo & Stitch" project will need to retain the emotional core and the powerful themes of family ('ohana') that were central to both the original animated film and the successful 2025 live-action remake. The concept of Stitch's "cousins," for instance, strongly reinforces these themes of acceptance and belonging. Successfully exploring these cherished narratives in fresh and engaging ways, potentially across different mediums, will be crucial for the franchise's continued appeal and enduring legacy.
